Susan Powers-Lee
Susan Powers-Lee, Professor of Biology and Vice Provost for Honors and First-Year Programs, earned her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California at Berkeley and carried out postdoctoral work at Cornell University Medical College before joining Northeastern University in 1983. She has designed and taught courses at all levels of the undergraduate and graduate curriculum, and has received the Andrew W. Mellon Teacher Scientist Award. Her research program in protein structure/function earned twenty-four years of continuous funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), as well as the NIH Career Development Award and funding from the American Chemical Society, and included undergraduate and masters students in addition to eight graduated Ph.D. students. Dr. Powers-Lee was Chair of the Biology Department from 2000-2006, Vice Chair of the Faculty Senate in 2005/06, and has chaired a wide variety of university, college and departmental committees. She has been a regular member of the NIH Medical Biochemistry Study Section, an ad hoc member of numerous other NIH and National Science Foundation review panels, and a member of the Educational Affairs Committee of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. She served on the editorial board of The Journal of Biological Chemistry for three five-year terms and was on the founding editorial board of Protein Expression and Purification.
