The Bytes and the Bees

Junior Jake Rozin isn’t a middle-aged woman—but he knows how they shop.

For his co-op, the computer science major worked as a software developer for Boston’s BzzAgent. He created key social-networking tools for the word-of-mouth marketing firm’s Web site.

In the process, he also learned a ton about marketing—most often, for middle-aged women. “Consumers in that demographic are considered the shoppers of a household,” says Rozin. It’s why many BzzAgent “campaigns”—where members receive freebies and are asked to spread the products and the word—are geared towards this population.

Rozin, who is considering doubling up with a journalism degree, enjoyed contributing to the small company, where he often lunched with the CEO, and took in more than just tech talk.

“It was great to be around the sales and marketing teams and to learn about a field I didn’t know about previously,” says Rozin. Not to give his own field short shrift. “I was on a cohesive engineering team, working on products that they were working on,” he explains. “I was able to learn from full-time developers, and was also able to help.”

Now that sounds like an experience worth Bzzing about.
