Art Exhibit

The African American Master Artists-in-Residence Program and the Hawthorne Youth and Community Center in Roxbury collaborated to create unique life-skills classes for Boston-area young people. Students spent six weeks this summer learning about woodworking, career training, and life skills.

Former Negro League baseball players visit Northeastern

Art Exhibit

As part of the programming connected to the art exhibition on the Negro Leagues, infielder Mahlon Duckett, his former Negro Leagues teammate Stanley “Doc” Glenn, and Red Sox Hall of Famer Luis Tiant addressed the Northeastern community on Wednesday, July 14. Scores of Northeastern community members enjoyed a discussion on social issues and awareness of contributions of Negro League baseball players. The art exhibition, Shades of Greatness: The Art of Negro Leagues Baseball, is on display through July 23.

Art Exhibit

Northeastern is hosting an art exhibition on the Negro Leagues at the university’s Gallery 360. In conjunction with the show, Northeastern, the Boston Red Sox, and the Boston Foundation will collaborate to create a series of events and programs aimed at community organizations; public schools in Roxbury, Mission Hill, the Fenway and the South End; and youth baseball and softball leagues.

Back-to-school day at Parent University

Husky Hugs

Some 250 parents of students in the Boston Public Schools returned to class on Saturday at Northeastern, carrying books, taking notes and attending seminars and workshops.

The university hosted the second session of Parent University, a free, yearlong education and training program developed by the Boston Public Schools (BPS) to help parents support their children’s’ academic achievement. The adult learners attended sessions on a wide range of topics, including algebra, the MCAS, K-8 science, self-esteem, planning for college and keeping communication open with their teens.

Healthyn Kids Healthy Futures

Three major Boston institutions — Northeastern University, the Boston Red Sox, and Children’s Hospital Boston — are joining forces with Mayor Thomas Menino to combat the growing problem of childhood obesity. The Healthy Kids, Healthy Futures program, a pilot educational and research program, aims to educate preschool caregivers and parents about the importance of healthy eating and physical activity, and provide young children new opportunities to be active.
