Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps
Fire insurance maps document changes to structures and neighborhoods over time. Originally produced for insurance underwriters, these maps today provide researchers with a snapshot of a place in time. Click on image to browse more than 2000 Sanborn Maps documenting circa eighty cities in South Carolina from 1884 to 1923. This site also offers images of more than two hundred unpublished draft maps of other cities in the state.
The New South Newspaper, 1862 - 1866
Beginning in March 1862, postmaster Joseph H. Sears of the U.S. Army edited and published this weekly newspaper in Port Royal, S.C. Operations moved to the town of Beaufort, S.C., sometime in 1865 and remained there until publication ceased in 1867. The New South offers a glimpse into an era of unprecedented social upheaval in the South Carolina Lowcountry. The 64 issues available online are fully searchable and readable with the use of the Adobe Acrobat Reader.
