Thomas W. Butler, M.D.

Dr. Thomas Butler
Senior Staff Medical Oncologist
Associate Professor of Interdisciplinary Oncology

Dr. Thomas W. Butler is an associate professor of interdisciplinary oncology at the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute. He participates in clinical research, teaching and patient care. He has appointments as an associate professor in both internal medicine and the physician assistant study program.

Dr. Butler is currently a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Society of Hematology, and is a Fellow in the American College of Physicians. Dr. Butler also serves on the Board of Directors for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society of Alabama.

When asked about his philosophy of patient care, he said, “All cancer patients must be treated as unique individuals with personal needs, goals, and spiritual beliefs. Oncologists have a unique privilege and honor to accompany and assist the cancer patient in their journey from diagnosis, through treatment, and hopefully cure. This is best accomplished with an interdisciplinary approach, which we encourage here at the Mitchell Cancer Institute.”

Dr. Butler received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in 1981. His residency in Internal Medicine was completed at the Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, Tenn., and a subsequent fellowship in hematology and oncology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Prior to joining USA, Dr. Butler had a broad history working with teaching institutions which included an assistant professorship at Texas Tech University School of Medicine in Lubbock, Texas, an assistant professorship at East Carolina University School of Medicine in Greenville, N.C., and serving as a clinical assistant professor of medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine affiliate network in Nashville. Dr. Butler also served both as a staff member and as medical director of the Gateway Medical Cancer Center in Clarksville, Tenn.

Dr. Butler’s clinical focus is on malignancies of the blood, chronic lymphomas, breast cancer, and head and neck cancers. He is also interested in complimentary and integrative therapies, as well as spirituality in coping with chronic disease.
