Dr. David Clarkson is a Senior Staff Physician and Chief of the Medical Oncology Service at the Mitchell Cancer Institute. As a veteran member of the Mobile medical community Dr. Clarkson’s career has come full circle. A graduate of the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville, Dr. Clarkson completed his internship and first year of residency at the University of Pittsburgh, with his senior year of residency completed at Washington University in St. Louis. After refining his area of interest, Dr. Clarkson spent the next two years as a clinical and research fellow in the division of hematology at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.
His acceptance of a faculty position at the University of South Alabama’s department of internal medicine and hematology in 1974 began his career along the Gulf Coast. Over the years, he has distinguished himself in private practice as one of the leading medical oncologist in both Mobile and Baldwin County, as well as the region. His primary focus has been in the areas of hematology and lymphomas.
When asked about his practice returning to the University of South Alabama he said, “I am enthusiastic about the research opportunities of working with a large cancer research organization and working with new colleagues to promote the development of sub specialty programs and clinics within the medical oncology branch.”
Dr. Clarkson also has a keen interest in the development and design of electronic medical records software. He has been instrumental in developing a program that navigates large, complex patient databases in order to manage medical problems more easily. Several of his innovations are copyrighted.
