Dr. John R. Russell
Dr. John R. Russell is Chief of the Radiation Oncology Service at the Mitchell Cancer Institute. He is also the medical director for the radiation oncology department at the Mobile Infirmary Medical Center, where he has practiced since 1983. A native of Texas, Dr. Russell graduated from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio with a bachelor of science degree in physics. He attended the University of Texas School of Biomedical Sciences at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, where he was a graduate student in medical physics. He went on to the University of Wisconsin, where he obtained his master’s degree in radiological sciences. He then returned to San Antonio to attend medical school at the University of Texas. Graduating in 1976, he completed his internship in internal medicine at the William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Texas.

Following the completion of his residency in radiation oncology at the University of Florida in 1980, he was appointed chief of radiation therapy service at Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center in Denver, where he attained the rank of Major MC, U.S. Army. In 1983, he relocated to the Gulf Coast. His civic involvement includes service on the Medical Society of Mobile County Board of Censors and the Mobile County Board of Health. He is a past president of the Mobile County American Cancer Society, where he has served as a member of the ACS Board of Directors since 1986.

Dr. Russell has consistently been awarded the designation of Best Doctors in America. He is the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group principal investigator for the Mobile Infirmary Medical Center and serves as co-investigator in additional national trial groups. His participation in translational research trials will be valuable in moving basic science research findings at the Mitchell Cancer Institute to the active clinical trial arena. Dr. Russell’s insight and experience are what put him on the list for “Top Docs in the Bay Area” chosen by his peers in the 2006 issue of Mobile Bay Monthly. When asked how he feels about receiving this coveted award, Dr. Russell said, “It has been a great honor to assist in the care of so many wonderful patients and to work collaboratively with the outstanding physicians in this area.”

Dr. Russell’s special interests include the treatment of breast, head and neck, prostate and gynecologic malignancies. He is a fellow of the American College of Radiology and the American College of Radiation Oncology. He serves on national committees for the American Society of Radiation Oncology, Radiation Oncology Institute, and the Association of Community Cancer Centers. He is a member of the national CyberKnife Society and his 15-year experience in stereotactic radiosurgery of brain tumors brings expertise to the CyberKnife program at the Mitchell Cancer Institute.
