Dr. Stephen Sawrie is a radiation oncologist with the Mitchell Cancer Institute. Originally training for a career in neurologic research, Dr. Sawrie graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor of science degree in psychology in 1989. He obtained his master’s degree from the University of Tennessee in experimental psychology, and then he went on to complete his Ph.D. in neuropsychology at the Pacific Graduate School in Palo Alto, Calif.
In 1996, he was recruited to the University of Alabama in Birmingham to complete his postdoctoral fellowship in neuropsychology. He remained at UAB as an adjuvant professor of research in the epilepsy division of the department of neurology. While there, he obtained three grants investigating the role of neuroimaging in the prediction of cognitive morbidity after surgery for refractory mesial temporal lobe epilepsy.
In 1999, Dr. Sawrie decided to further his education by pursuing a degree in medicine. He was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society in 2001 and completed medical school in 2003. Following an internship at Baptist Medical Center, he returned to UAB in 2004 where he became chief resident of radiation oncology in his final year.
Dr. Sawrie’s extensive background in research sciences includes 41 peer-reviewed publications, as well as a chapter on neuropsychology of adult neuro-oncology published by the American Psychological Association in “Clinical Neuropsychology: A Pocket Handbook for Assessment,” second edition, 2005. Dr. Sawrie looks forward to developing the Cyberknife stereotactic radiosurgery program, offering both intracranial and extracranial stereotactic radiosurgical treatment to patients with cancer in Mobile and the surrounding region.
Dr. Sawrie is an avid outdoorsman with a love for saltwater fishing, bird hunting and SEC sports. He enjoys living in an area where he can instill those same values in his children. “My desire is to work with my MCI colleagues to develop a center of excellence that not only allows patients from Mobile to stay here for cutting-edge cancer treatment, but also attracts patients from around the region.”
