USA President Gordon Moulton:

The life of Mayer Mitchell can be summed up best in one word: service. He gave freely and generously of his time and resources to serve and support the community that he so dearly loved. The University of South Alabama was incredibly fortunate to become the beneficiary of Mayer’s generosity with his time, expertise and philanthropy. He will be forever remembered as a legendary figure in the growth of the University and, in turn, the improvement of educational and health care opportunities for everyone in the Mobile region.

Mayer exchanged ideas and influence with presidents, political leaders and renowned philanthropists, but he was always focused on what he could do to make the world a better place. His life had many dimensions, but his philosophy was simple and direct: "Do the right thing, and make bold strokes."

The University of South Alabama family will always remember him as Mr. USA.

Dr. Steven Stokes, chairman, USA Board of Trustees:

Mayer Mitchell and Arlene and their family have been lifelong supporters of the University. No University has ever had better or stronger supporters than they have been. Certainly, without Mayer, Arlene and Abe’s support, South Alabama certainly could not be as far down the path as it is to becoming a nationally recognized University and center of excellence.

He will be greatly missed. There is no one on the horizon to take his place.

Dr. Carl Moore, dean, Mitchell College of Business:

The University of South Alabama has lost a dedicated supporter and friend. I can think of no individual who has devoted more of his time, energy and resources to the growth and development of the University of South Alabama than Mayer Mitchell. I am deeply saddened that he will not see the opening of the Mitchell Cancer Institute, a project that was so important to him. The medical care provided to future generations in our community and region will serve as a lasting legacy to Mayer.

The Mitchell College of Business has lost a special friend and supporter. We are honored that our college was named for his family.

Dr. Samuel J. Strada, interim dean, USA College of Medicine

The College of Medicine lost a great friend and supporter with the untimely death of Mayer Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell maintained a keen interest and a close relationship with the College of Medicine throughout his many years of service on the Board of Trustees. He will be greatly missed.

Dr. Michael R. Boyd, Abraham Mitchell chair and director USA Mitchell Cancer Institute

I am sure my thoughts today are similar to those of so many other of his friends and colleagues worldwide whom he touched, who loved and respected Mayer Mitchell, and who were privileged to be ‘adopted’ into his extended ‘family.’

Bubba Mitchell was an inspiration to me.
I will miss him terribly.
Bubba will always be an inspiration to me.
Bubba’s incredible generosity, humanity, and fighting spirit will endure forever in his Mitchell Cancer Institute.
Thanks, Bubba, thanks so much, for everything.

Jennifer Edwards, President of the USA Student Goverment Association

I was deeply saddened to hear about Mr. Mitchell's passing. He was a great man who contributed so much to the students of our university. The generosity and kindness that the Mitchell family has shown the students of the University of South Alabama has changed countless lives, and it will continue to do so in the years to come.
