Family Nurse Practitioner Nurse
The role of nurse practitioner specializing in Family Nursing is offered at the University of South Alabama College of Nursing. The MSN program prepares graduates for certification as an FNP and for doctoral study. Graduates of the program are able to synthesize and apply advanced knowledge, theories, and research to a specialized area of nursing practice and function as leaders in practice to contribute to the advancement of the nursing profession.

A common core of courses are offered online including concepts, theory, research, and issues related to advanced nursing practice. The FNP Track requires all students to attend a 2-5 day on-campus orientation while they are enrolled in CMN 568 and/or 569. Faculty will notify students regarding the orientation dates and schedule. Clinical requirements can usually be completed with preceptors in the students’ home community. Students may be required to return to campus at the end of fall, spring, and summer semesters for a final exam and orientation to the next semester.

While FNP/MSN classes are taught online, all students enrolled in CMN 569 (first FNP clinical course), in the fall of 2012, are required to attend a mandatory three (3) day orientation. The orientation will be held November 7-9, 2012. Attendance is required and will allow for questions and interaction with course faculty. Various clinical skills workshops will be held during the orientation.
