Summer Semester 2009 Placement Exams

Students who plan to take a mathematics course and have not taken this exam online or have not successfully completed a college level math course of MA 112 or higher are required to take the online Mathematics Placement Exam prior to advising and registration. Calculators are not permitted during this exam.

Students are encouraged to take the Math Placement Exam online 48 hours before coming to campus for orientation. The exam is available online from any computer with Internet access. Go to www.southalabama.edu/mathplacement. If you have questions, please call the Department of Mathematics at (251) 460-6264.

Time: 24/7 online
Location: Any computer with Internet access

Students planning to take General Chemistry I [CH 131 and CH 131 Lab] are required to take the General Chemistry Placement Exam (GCPT). A passing score is required in order to register for CH 131 and CH 131 Lab. Students who do not make a passing score must take CH 100 Fundamentals of Chemistry prior to taking CH 131. Students must bring their student number (J00), a #2 pencil and their own calculator to this test. There is no fee for this exam.

General Chemistry I is required primarily for students in the Colleges of Allied Health Professions, Engineering and some Arts and Sciences programs. If you have questions, please call the Department of Chemistry at (251)460-6181.

Location: Chemistry Building, Room 201

All students are required to take a basic computing skills test, the Computer Proficiency Exam (CPE). Students who do not make a passing score will have the opportunity to repeat the test. Those students who do not make a passing score the second time will be required to complete one of the following options before graduation:

(1) passing CIS 150 Introduction to Computer Applications or another CIS course specified by the major

OR

(2) for students who are pursuing a major leading to teacher certification: passing EDM 310 Microcomputing Systems in Education. This course is required for all teacher certification programs.

NOTE: Students are advised to complete the computer competency requirement in the freshman or sophomore year since computing skills are used in most courses. Also, students should note that passing the CPE Exam or passing CIS 150 is a prerequisite for CIS 250.
