USA Biosafety Policy Statement
The University of South Alabama College of Medicine Biosafety Committee meets as required by the National Institutes of Health to discuss and categorize biohazardous work and to formally register such work. The committee is responsible for the inventory, review and approval of all biological hazards use and safety practices. Details for registering biohazardous materials are contained in the USA College of Medicine Biosafety Manual and appear as links on this site.
All work with biohazardous materials must be registered and approved with the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC). To initiate the review process, the principal investigator must submit an IBC registration form to the IBC Committee, CSAB 118.
All new IBC applications, amendments, and correspondance are now processed through IRBnet.

Bio-safety Training
All employees at risk for occupational exposure to potentially biohazardous materials must be trained before beginning work or conducting biohazardous procedures independently. Please contact the Office of Research Compliance (460-6625) for bloodborne pathogen training materials. A post test must be completed before training certification is granted. The Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OHSA) requires training on a annual basis and records must be retained for a minium of three years.
