James Smith, Jr.
Associate Professor of Music

James Smith joined the Troy University faculty in 1988. He has served as associate conductor of the University’s Symphony Band and as graduate music studies director.

Smith earned his bachelor’s degree in music education and his education specialist certification at Troy University. He earned his master’s degree from Jacksonville State University.

Prior to joining the Troy University faculty, Smith served as conductor of the Gulf Coast Symphony Orchestra from 1981-88. He also directed bands and orchestras on the high school and community college level for almost 15 years. Smith has served as a clinician and guest conductor for bands across Alabama, Georgia and Florida. In addition, he has performed as a professional jazz/pop musician supporting such acts as Bob Hope, Franki Valli and the Four Seasons, Phil Collins and Mary Ann Mobley
