Center for Indic Studies Concert
UMass Dartmouth has many distinctive centers, partnerships, and programs that demonstrate its commitment to the community and its leadership in addressing contemporary issues. Some centers and programs sponsor events, services, and publications that are available to the public. Please refer to the individual center's or program's web site for information.

University Centers

Advanced Technology & Manufacturing Center

Provides advanced technology and manufacturing solutions, through industry and university partnerships, to meet current and future business needs.

Arnold M. Dubin Labor Education Center

Meets the educational needs of workers, as members and leaders in the labor movement, and as active and responsible citizens in the community.

Boivin Center for French Language and Culture

Promotes the teaching of and appreciation of French language and culture and acts as a catalyst for French studies at the university and regional levels.

Botulinum Research Center

This world-class research center focuses on the the botulinum toxin and efforts to combat its use in bio-terrorism threats.

Business Innovation Research Center

Supports the economic growth and globalization of the SouthCoast of Massachusetts through applied research, innovative projects, training and conferences.

Center for Indic Studies

Highlights India's time-tested eternal values for world progress, peace, and harmony. Cultivates relevance of ancient Indic human values through scholarly understanding and promotion. (Flash needed to view this site. Click here for free Flash download.)

Center for Jewish Culture

Increases understanding and communication between Jewish and non-Jewish people of Southeastern Massachusetts.

Center for Marketing Research

Dedicated to facilitating the growth of the region's businesses by providing an economic alternative for meeting business needs for research, training, and consulting in any and all aspects of marketing.

Center for Molecular Diagnostics

Under development by the Medical Laboratory Science Department, it is intended to conduct tests on forensic samples for crime labs throughout the country.

Center for Policy Analysis

A multidisciplinary research unit dedicated to the creation and dissemination of knowledge that facilitates economic, social, and political development.

Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture

A multidisciplinary international studies and outreach unit dedicated to the study of the language, literatures, and cultures of the Portuguese-speaking world. The center publishes a series of books examining Portuguese culture and history.

Center for Rehabilitation Engineering

Provides opportunities for UMass Dartmouth engineering students to adapt computer systems for physically challenged people who benefit from assistive communication technology. The non-profit SHARE Foundation supports the work of the center.

Center for Teaching Excellence

Dedicated to continuous improvement in university-level teaching effectiveness and student learning.

Kaput Center for Research and Innovation in Mathematics Education

The James J. Kaput Center for Research and Innovation in Mathematics Education provides a focus and support for sustained investigation of foundational issues in the field of mathematics education. The Center is a place where fundamental problems in mathematics education are studied, discussed, and analyzed through conferences, colloquiums, research and development, commissioned reports, and think-tank meetings.

Ora M. DeJesus Gerontology Center

Provides research and resources for students or prospective students of UMass Dartmouth who wish to explore the university's Gerontology Programs, for community members interested in elder affairs, and for those who work in Gerontology and related fields.

Centers

Academic Advising Center

Provides help for students in choosing a major, finding an advisor, course selection, registration, and any other academic problems or concerns. Center staff members also help students plan Study Abroad experiences.

Career Resource Center

Provides students and alumni a wide array of career and employment related services. The Center also coordinates community service activities and experiential learning opportunities.

Center for University, School and Community Partnerships

Provides high quality professional learning experiences for beginning and experienced K-12 teachers to strengthen their content knowledge, broaden their teaching practices and curricula, and acquire leadership skills necessary to improve schools and student achievement.

Frederick Douglass Unity House

FDUH, also known as Unity House, provides a supportive environment for the academic, cultural, recreational, and social pursuits of UMass Dartmouth's students of color. It is a co-curricular center where activities and initiatives are designed that challenge, foster, and enrich the cultural life of the UMass Dartmouth community.

International Student Center

Serves international students and scholars with support and advice to help make their stays here as productive, interesting and rewarding as possible. The Center provides general advice and assistance with campus life and personal needs as well as ongoing support with visas and other necessary documentation.

Small Business Development Center

Part of a national network of more than 950 small business development center offices--the largest small business assistance program in the United States--the center provides free and confidential business counseling to existing or prospective small business people.

Women's Resource Center

Focuses on enhancing the quality of life and enriching the experience of women at UMass Dartmouth by providing a physically and psychologically supportive environment for students, faculty, staff, and administrators.

Writing and Reading Center

Part of the Academic Resource Center, the Writing and Reading Center provides students with writing help, tutoring for courses in the humanities or social sciences, skill-building, and support for physical or learning disabilities.

Partnerships

SouthCoast Connect

A partnership of public higher education institutions in southeastern Massachusetts : Bridgewater State College, Bristol Community College, Cape Cod Community College, Massasoit Community College, and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

SouthCoast Development Partnership

UMass Dartmouth provides the organizational framework, facilities, and staff support on an in-kind basis for the SouthCoast Development Partnership whose membership is comprised of chief executive officers, municipalities, chambers of commerce, local economic development agencies, university, elected officials, and community leaders from the region.

SouthCoast Education Compact

Addresses the level of educational attainment in the South Coast region. The SouthCoast Education Compact (SCEC) is an education partnership among business leaders, area School Superintendents, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and Bristol Community College.

Southeastern Massachusetts Agricultural Partnership

Provides economic development assistance for agriculture in southeastern Massachusetts. SEMAP helps farm businesses achieve economic success by providing them with access to needed business and technical guidance, and by coordinating outreach and education/training activities in support of local agriculture.

Sustainability Initiative

Dedicated to infusing the principles of sustainability in four areas of campus activity: curriculum, research, public service and operations.

Programs & Projects

ATLAST Project

Encourages and facilitates the use of software in the teaching of linear algebra.

CATLS: The Consortium for the Advancement of Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship

Provides faculty with the structure, support, and environment for renewal, development, and advancement to work together to generate innovative and critical conversations and activities focusing on teaching, learning, and scholarship.

Changing Lives Through Literature (CLTL)

Provides an alternative sentencing program based on the power of literature to transform lives through reading and group discussion.

College Now

Provides access to academically disadvantaged students and gives them strong support while they are enrolled. College Now is a special admissions and support program for low-income and/or first-generation college students.

Cooperative Education Program

A program within the College of Engineering that combines classroom education with workplace learning and the opportunity to "earn while you learn."

E-Commerce Network

Enhances communication and facilitates sharing of resources among Southeastern Massachusetts firms interested in electronic business.

German American Exchange Program

Provides information for German students who are planning to attend UMass Dartmouth, and for UMass Dartmouth students who are planning to study abroad in Germany.

Honors Program

Supports UMass Dartmouth students who are interested in pursuing more challenging academic activities through special courses, an honors area in the Residence Halls, contests, events, conferences, retreats and the Annual Honors Convocation.

IMPULSE Program

Combines an integrated first-year engineering curriculum with active collaborative learning, teamwork, and the latest technology to help students gain skills needed in their engineering majors and future careers.

New England Gaming Research Project

A project of the Center for Policy Analysis, the Gaming Research Project provides policymakers, the general public, and the media with independent and objective research on the economic and fiscal impacts of gaming in the New England region.

SimCalc

A project of the Kaput Center for Research and Innovation in Mathematics Education, SimCalc seeks changes in the mathematics curriculum by introducing powerful mathematical ideas such as calculus to a wider and younger population.

Spotlight Program

Provides an academic year filled with thought-provoking presentations, small group discussions, short-term courses, and field trips for regional high school students demonstrating academic or artistic achievement.

Study Abroad

The Academic Advising Center offers students semester-long opportunities to study abroad under the direction of UMD advisors or independently. The Division of Professional and Continuing Education (DCE) offers faculty guided summer abroad programs.

Upward Bound

Provides a college preparatory program for disadvantaged high school students attending New Bedford High School, Westport High, and Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School to generate the academic skills and motivation necessary for gaining admission to and succeeding in post-secondary education.

Workers Education Program Arnold M. Dubin Labor Education Center's

Workers' Education Program (WEP) offers free Adult Basic Education classes funded by the Massachusetts Department of Education. These classes include Citizenship, three levels of English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), and three levels of General Educational Development (GED).
