The Business Innovation Research Center (BIRC) is a UMass Dartmouth research center designed to conduct research and disseminate knowledge about emerging business practices such as E-Business and Supply Chains. Potential research clients and partners include South Coast port and airport authorities, regional/state/federal planning agencies, oil/gas/chemical industry, high tech industry, regional distributors, transportation carriers, third-party logistics operators, and Information Technology providers. The BIRC will also be affiliated with other research centers, both domestic and international.
Considering the economic growth and globalization of South Coast of Massachusetts, a Business Innovation Research Center focusing on academic research that would immediately benefit the companies in the region is highly significant. Marine science and technology and high-tech industries are ripe for development in South Coast of Massachusetts. To help companies in these and other industries to succeed, research activities will be designed to facilitate economic growth and their management, training and labor force needs. Charlton College of Business, in collaboration with faculty from other colleges within the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth campus, will provide the services through applied research. Local industries in services, marine and manufacturing, and students will be the main stakeholders of the center activities. Establishment of this center will compliment the activities of the existing centers on the campus. BIRC will closely work with Engineering and School of Marine Science and Technology (SMAST) and Advanced Technology and Manufacturing Center (ATMC). The center will also strategically work with local Chambers of Commerce and other network of companies including non-profit organizations in South Coast of Massachusetts.
With the increased globalization of goods and services, an efficient e-business, supply chain and logistics services through system development, production and distribution are vital to all sectors of the economy. BIRC will support the research and development of successful e-business, modeling and optimization of marine industry problems, costing, supply systems and logistics for public and private organizations. It will also provide the community with training and analysis to improve business operations. The center will develop the expertise and strategies needed to attract continuous outside research funding to expand the research activities and publications at CCB.
Joint ownership and collaborative efforts among the College of Business , College of Engineering , South Coast Development Partnership, ATMC and SMAST will ensure that engineering, economic and behavioral concepts and methodologies are integrated into the process.

The BIRC is an Industry-CCB partnership with companies as affiliates designed to conduct research, develop, identify, organize, store, and disseminate knowledge about emerging business environments that are characterized by E-Business, Supply Chains and their Management. It brings a multi-disciplinary perspective to the study of business excellence incorporating e-business and supply chains. Consequently, in addition to logistics, manufacturing, and retailing, BIRC also emphasizes corporate strategy, governance, information and communication technologies, organizational, marketing, accounting, finance, and regulatory issues in e-business, supply chain and logistics management in both manufacturing and services.
The BIRC will be affiliated with other centers both within the country and overseas.

BIRC will bring together researchers and practitioners from other universities and research institutions to develop a multidisciplinary research theme over the years in emerging enterprise network environments. It will give due priority to small to medium sized enterprises in the region as they form a significant part of the economy of South Coast of Massachusetts.

As affiliates, companies can participate in business excellence programs in a number of ways. Their involvement in Center initiatives, classrooms activities, and/or recruitment of students helps us to deliver programs that meet business community needs. Specific ways to get involved include:
Industry Partnerships will allow researchers at UMass Dartmouth to work closely with members from local companies to shape and prioritize research topics such as IT, costing, logistics and supply chain management. The following elements describe the Center's multilevel relationship framework:
