Wednesday, 09:00 AM - 12:00 PM, Dartmouth Campus, LArts 119
The tragic events of September 11, 2001 have compelled serious attention to Islam at all levels and in all sorts of institutions across the country. But even without this geopolitical or national security imperative, Islam ought to merit our attention given that it is the faith of one person in five in the world. In the case of Africa, Muslims are found in virtually all countries, and in substantial numbers even outside North Africa. It is equally worthy of note that the history of Islam in Africa is almost as old as the history of the religion itself. This course is intended to unpack this history (of Islam and Africa) and make it intelligible for undergraduates without any background in African history. It is also intended to give the students a basic knowledge of Islam: its early history, its foundational framework, and practice, in addition to how it has shaped African history and at the same time, how the African environment has shaped or re-shaped the religion.

Derivatives serve the important function of managing financial risk. They are widely used by corporations, financial institutions, and professional investors and individuals. The derivative markets have grown very rapidly during the last 35 years. Because of the effectiveness of derivatives in managing risk, investors are willing to supply more funds to the financial markets. This benefits the economy because the greater flow of funds to the financial markets helps in keeping the cost of capital low, and more firms are likely to raise the capital they need. The course covers organization of derivative markets, various derivatives used in risk management, and various strategies to manage risk. The derivatives studied include options, forwards, futures, and swaps. The important Binomial and Black-Scholes pricing models would also be covered in the course.
