UMass Dartmouth Fitness Center FAQ’s

Who can use the fitness center?

The fitness center can be used by Umass Dartmouth students, employees (including Sodexho), employee family members, alumni, and SNESL students.

Is there a fee?

Full time Umass Dartmouth students pay an Athletics Fee which includes the fitness center as well as other athletic department offerings.

There is currently no fee for University employees.

Employee family members (at least 18 years of age unless accompanied by family member), alumni, part time or DCE students, and SNESL students pay a fee of $50 per semester.  Payments are due January 1st, June 1st, and September 1st and they are not pro-rated.

Can I bring a guest?

We do offer guest passes for a $5 per visit fee.  Guest must be at least 18 years of age.

What are the hours?

The hours change depending on the time of year.  The master schedule for the academic year can be found online at www.umassd.edu click on the link for athletics and there you will find a link for the fitness center page.

What type of instructional programs do you offer?

We offer a wide variety of instructional programs during the Spring and Fall semesters – we currently do not offer summer classes.  The class schedule can be found online at  www.umassd.edu click on the link for athletics and there you will find a link for the fitness center page.

Is there someone there to help me design and workout and/or teach me how to use the machines?

There is always a staff member on hand to answer questions and teach proper use of our equipment.  We offer an orientation training session where we go through a basic “full body” workout that we have designed.  This workout is designed for beginners or those who may have not exercised for a while.  Appointments can only be made in person (no phone appointments) and are best accomplished early in the day when the center is less busy.

What do I need to sign up?

There is a registration form that has the rules and regulations as well as a simple health questionnaire that must be filled out every year.  This form can be found online at  www.umassd.edu click on the link for athletics and there you will find a link for the fitness center page.  Click on the staff directory link, the two page registration form is on this page.  Bring the completed form along with your Umass pass to the fitness center to sign up.  If for some reason you can not print the form, they are also available at the fitness center.  A Umass Pass is required if you are signing up for the first time.

Is there a dress code?

Proper workout attire is required.  For example; shorts or sweatpants, sneakers, and a t-shirt should be worn.  Jeans, boots, and especially sandals (open toed shoes) are not allowed.  Shirts must be worn at all times.

Are there lockers available?

Yes.  There are lockers in both changing rooms as well as in the hallway.  We suggest bringing a lock if storing valuables as the fitness center is not responsible for lost or stolen items.  If you do not have a lock, we have $.50 rental lockers available.  We do not hold personal items and bags of any kind are not allowed in the workout area.

What happens if I forget or lose my fitness center pass?

The first pass is free, after that a new pass costs $5.  You are expected to keep your pass between semesters.  If a pass is worn out we will replace it free of charge if the owner still possesses it.

Anyone who forgets their pass has the opportunity to be manually checked in to the system.   The charge for this is $1 and is payable upon entry or on the next visit.  Anyone who owes a balance will not be allowed to use the fitness center until that balance is paid.

Will the fitness center be open when the university closes on snow days?

Possibly, it depends on the severity of the storm.  A decision will be made in the morning and if we open the hours will be 12 noon to 5pm.  Call 508 910-6921 check the website for information.
