(Dartmouth, MA) - The UMass Dartmouth ice hockey team was well represented when
the 2004-04 ECAC Northeast All-Conference awards were handed out on Wednesday.
Junior forward Eric Frank (Waltham, MA) was named the ECAC NE Player of the Year,
senior goalie Kevin McGowan (Hingham, MA) captured ECAC NE Goalie of the Year and
head coach John Rolli shared the ECAC NE Coach of the Year honors. Senior forward
Scott Trahan (Chelmsford, MA) joined Frank and McGowan as First Team selections on
the ECAC NE All-Conference team, while senior defenseman Brandon Koziara
(West Springfield, MA) received an Honorable Mention.
UMass Dartmouth's three players on the ECAC NE First Team were the most of any team
within the conference as these individual awards come on the heels of one of the Corsairs'
most successful seasons in recent memory. UMass Dartmouth finished the season with
a 22-5 overall record, 14-1 in the ECAC NE, finishing second during the regular season.
Seeded second in the ECAC NE Tournament, UMass Dartmouth earned a pair of post-season
victories, advancing to the ECAC NE championship game before falling to Curry College, 6-1.
The loss snapped a 15-game winning streak for UMass Dartmouth and left the Corsairs with
22 victories, the most since the 1997-98 team captured an ECAC title with a 22-5 record.
The post-season honors for Frank and Trahan recognize a pair of players who were among the top scorers within the ECAC Northeast and among all scorers nationally in the NCAA
Division III throughout the 2004-05 season.
Frank was the top point scorer nationally within NCAA Division III and the ECAC NE with 24 goals
and 35 assists for 59 points, an average of 2.27 points per game. Frank was also second in the
ECAC NE in goal scoring and third nationally at 0.92 goals per game. He was second in the
conference and third nationally in assists with 1.35 assists per game. Frank also topped the ECAC
NE in power play points (9-14-23) and was tied for third in power play goals (nine).
Trahan was among the national leaders in several categories before a mid-season injury knocked
him out of a several games. He returned the lineup later in the season and finished with 19 goals
and 19 points for 38 points, fifth in the ECAC NE and fourth among the national Div. III leaders.
Trahan was third in goals in the conference (19) and seventh nationally at 0.86 goals per game.
A four-year letter winner for the Corsairs in goal, McGowan capped his career with a tremendous
senior season. His 21-5 overall record gave him a .808 winning percentage, best among ECAC NE
goalies and fifth in NCAA Division III. He finished second in the conference with a .908 saves
percentage and a 2.59 goals against average. For his career, McGowan appeared in 75 games and
had a 55-14-1 record with a .894 saves percentage and a 2.82 goals against average.
For Rolli, the Co-Coach of the Year award is the second time he has been honored by the ECAC,
winning the award back in 1996. He has also captured the New England Hockey Writer's Coach of
the Year award three times. Rolli shared the 2004-05 award with Erik Noack of Johnson and Wales
University.
Koziara was an ECAC NE Honorable Mention selection after leading the Corsair defense to an
outstanding season. The senior defenseman finished with six goals and 12 assist for 18 points,
seventh in team scoring. More importantly, he was the leader of a defensive unit which helped the
Corsairs finish second within the conference in scoring defense allowing 2.59 goals against per game.
