UMASS DARTMOUTH FALLS AT FITCHBURG STATE, 5-4

FITCHBURG, MA– Michael Goulet’s goal 3:57 into sudden-death overtime gave Fitchburg State a 5-4 victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team in a non-conference game at the Wallace Civic Center Tuesday evening.

Goulet picked up a loose puck and batted it past Corsair freshman goaltender Jon Dryjowicz-Burek (Ludlow, MA/Springfield Jr. Falcons) to end the game with just over a minute left in overtime.

Freshman forward Francis Gunn (Winthrop, MA/Berkshire Academy) had pulled the Corsairs into a 4-all tie when he scored at 13:48 of the third period to cap a two-goal UMD rally. A goal by senior forward Eric Frank (Waltham, MA/Traverse City Enforcers-EJHL) at 3:35 had allowed UMass Dartmouth to cut FSC’s lead to 4-3.

Each team scored twice in the opening period. Sophomore forward Jeff Grant (Burlington, MA/Austin Prep) gave UMD a 1-0 lead with a power=play goal at 2:08. Stephen Schofield tied the score for the Falcons a minute and 26 seconds later. Junior forward Kyle McCullough (Danvers, MA/Boston Jr. Blackhawks-IJHL) made it 2-1 at 9:22, but Mike Dryer’s goal at 15:13 made it 2-2 after one period.

Dryer and Ian Palmer scored goals a minute and three seconds apart late in the second period to stake Fitchburg State to a 4-2 lead after two periods.

Frank had a goal and two assists for UMass Dartmouth, while junior forward Peter Lindner (Parlin, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) had three assists.

The Corsairs out shot FSC, 46-21. Falcon goalie Devan McConnell made 42 saves, while Dryjowicz-Burek finished with 16.

UMD dropped to 3-3-0 with the defeat, while FSC improved to 5-1-1 overall. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Curry Saturday afternoon.
