2000 Season Review

UMass Dartmouth men's lacrosse finishes 6-8,
sixth in Pilgrim League�s Northwest Division

(Dartmouth, MA) - With a won-loss record of 6-8 overall and a 3-4 league mark, UMass Dartmouth finished sixth in the Pilgrim League's Northwest Division in 2000.

Coach Jeff Feroce's Corsairs' season was highlighted by an All-Northwest Division performance from sophomore midfielder Jared Gray (Weymouth, MA). Appearing in all 14 games for the Corsairs, Gray established himself as one of the top two-way players in the Pilgrim League and one of only 3 underclassmen on the Northwest Division All-Star team.

Gray accounted for a team-high 103 shots, scoring 23 goals with 14 assists for 37 points. He was third for UMass Dartmouth in goals and assists and tied for third in points and points per game (2.6). In one of his best performances of the season, Gray scored 5 of the Corsairs' 9 goals and added a pair of assists in a 21-9 loss to Plymouth State College in a season-ending game, which knocked UMass Dartmouth out of the playoffs.

Leading UMass Dartmouth�s scoring attack for the 2000 season was sophomore attacker Jim Ruggeri (Waltham, MA) with team highs in goals with 39 and points with 54. He was second on the team in assists (15) and tops in points per game at 3.9. Ruggeri�s 54 points on the season placed him 10th among the Pilgrim League scoring leaders, while his 2.79 goals per game was 7th best in the league. Twice during the 2000 season Ruggeri netted 5 goals in a single game. He scored 5 goals plus an assist in a 10-5 UMass Dartmouth win over Maine Maritime Academy and also scored 5 goals in a 12-10 Corsair loss to Keene State College.

With 35 goals and 6 assists for a total of 41 points, junior attacker Michael Beaton (Pittsfield, MA) was the Corsairs' number two scorer for 2000. In 14 games, Beaton had 76 shots on goal, finishing with a 2.9 points per game average. Beaton had a pair of five-goal games, including 5 plus an assist in a 14-13 win over American International College and 5 more against Franklin Pierce College in a 16-5 UMass Dartmouth victory.

Sophomore attacker Ryan McDonald (Weymouth, MA) was the Corsairs' third-leading scorer, netting 16 goals and a team-leading 21 assists for 37 points, tied for third on the team. His 1.5 assists per game was 12th best in the Pilgrim League. McDonald earned Pilgrim League Honor Roll on April 24 after scoring 3 goals with 3 assists in the Corsairs' 12-10 win at Norwich University. Rounding out the Corsairs' scoring for the year was sophomore attacker/midfielder Bryan Wallace (Wilbraham, MA) with 17 goals and 11 assists for 28 points. Wallace's best outing was a 5-goal, 2-assist performance in an 18-13 Corsair loss to SUNY-Utica in the season opener.

Senior goalie Adam Centofanti (Waltham, MA) handled most of the chores in net for the Corsairs, appearing in 12 games with a 4-8 record. Centofanti made 255 saves, an average of 13.4 per game and posted a saves percentage of .613, eighth best in the league. His goals against average ranked 11th among Pilgrim League netminders. Freshman goalie Jason Doyle (Waltham, MA) had a pair of appearances with a .590 saves percentage, a 9.0 goals against average and an 0-2 record.
