Men’s soccer report:

Corsairs improve to 3-1 with 3-0 win over St. Joseph’s

Soares named LEC Rooke of the Week

UMass Dartmouth made the long trip to Standish, ME pay off on Sept. 11 with a 3-0 win over St. Joseph’s College.  The win improves the Corsairs’ record to 3-1 overall.

The Little East Conference Rookie of the Week, Lee Soares (Dartmouth, MA), got the Corsairs on the scoreboard early with an assist from Jayr Fernandes (Dorchester, MA) at 16:06 of the first period.  Thirteen minutes later, it was 2-0 after Soares assisted on an Andy Ventura (Dartmouth, MA) goal at 29:00.  Jesse Vezina’s (Somerset, MA) unassisted goal at 67:00 of the second half closed out the scoring. Kyle Fossey (Townsend, MA) had three saves in net for the win.

Soares was also one of the Corsair stars in a 7-0 win over Curry on Sept. 7.  He had a pair of goals and an assist in the easy win. In the Corsiars’ first four games of the season, Soares has three goals and a pair of assists for eight points overall.

In addition to Soares’ goals against Curry, Fernandes also had a pair of goals, while Chris Fager (West Springfield, MA), Zach Michonski (Easthampton, MA) and Rudson Oliveira (Hyannis, MA) had single goals in the 7-0 win.

The Corsiars opened the 2004 season with a pair of solid efforts at the 2004 Holiday Inn/United Way Trailblazer Kickoff Classic hosted by Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams, MA.  In the opener on Sept. 4, Fernandes scored the only goal of the game for a 1-0 win over MCLA.  Neil Deloggio (Allentown, PA) made four saves in goal for the win.  In the Corsairs’ second game, UMass Dartmouth dropped a 1-0 decision to nationally ranked Wheaton College in double overtime.  Wheaton outshot the Corsairs, 19-7, but Fossey and Adam Rolfe (Southwick, MA) teamed up in net and allowed only one goal. Fossey had a pair of saves and Rolfe came up with 14. Fager was named the Defensive Player of the Tournament at the conclusion of the two-day event as the Corsairs placed third overall with Western New England taking second due to a tournament tiebreaker. With its win over UMass Dartmouth, Wheaton took home the tournament title.
