UMass Dartmouth's Little East Conference tennis championship streak reaches six straight years

(Dartmouth, MA) -- UMass Dartmouth's men's tennis team put together yet another outstanding season during the Spring of 2001, posting a 10-3 overall record and a fifth consecutive successful defense of their Little East Conference championship.

The Corsairs captured their sixth straight Little East Conference men's tennis championship with a pair of singles titles and one doubles championship during the two-day tournament in May at Rhode Island College. Coach Warren Preti's Corsairs defended their men's championship by accumulating 16.5 points to outdistance second-place Western Connecticut State (13 points) and Rhode Island College (10.5 points).

In addition to another LEC men's title to his credit, the victory extends Coach Preti's consecutive LEC championship string to nine in a row. Coach Preti's women's teams won a pair of LEC titles when he coached the Corsair women, in addition to the six consecutive titles his men's teams have captured, dating back to 1996.

Junior Jason Warren (Fall River, MA) was one of the heroes for UMass Dartmouth's championship effort, capturing both the #5 singles championship, as well as later teaming with freshman Dan Cohen (Chelmsford, MA) for the #3 doubles championship. In only two seasons at the LEC Championships, Warren has captured two singles and two doubles crowns. As a freshman last season, Warren was the #6 singles champion as well as the #3 doubles champion.

Sophomore Trevor Cabral (Dartmouth, MA) captured the Corsairs' second singles championship for 2001, taking the #6 singles crown. Last season, Cabral picked up his first LEC championship by taking the #3 singles title during the 2000 LEC Championships.

During the regular season, the Corsairs posted a 48-20 record in singles play and a 24-13 mark in doubles competition for a combined record of 72-42. Leading the way in singles was freshman Brendon Bowers (Somerset, MA), who finished with a team-high 10 wins against 3 losses. Sophomore Todd Cabral (Dartmouth, MA) was second in singles wins with an 8-4 record, while junior Tim Warren (Fall River, MA) came in third at 7-2. Jason Warren had a 6-2 singles record, while Trevor Cabral was 3-0 and Cohen was 4-3.

The Corsairs' had two doubles teams finish the season with 4-1 records, including Trevor Cabral-Cohen and Tim Warren-junior Chris Lumping (Falmouth, MA). Todd Cabral and senior James Green (Harwich, MA) were 3-0 and the team of Todd Cabral-Bowers was 3-1.

At the conclusion of the men's tennis team season, Coach Preti announced his retirement from coaching. A new head coach will be selected prior to the beginning of the Spring 2002 men's tennis season.
