Corsair women finish sixth at the New England
Division III Championships
(Dartmouth, MA) – The UMass Dartmouth women’s swimming and diving team, who finished second last year, ended the New England Championships at the sixth seed. The 2005 New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Championships consisted of 22 colleges and/or universities. The event was hosted by Bentley College from February 18 to February 20.
Coach Cathy Motta’s Corsairs were a consistent fifth place until today’s end. UMass who was second last year and third two years ago, finished with a total of 537 points. The host Bentley College swam away with the win finishing with 902 points.
Leading the way for UMass Dartmouth was Meaghan Coache (New Bedford, MA), who earned a first place, second place, and a few third place finishes. Diver Kelly Kidd (Denville, NJ) also earned a first and third place finish in the diving events. Teammate Seanne McRae (Taunton, MA), walked away with three third place finishes and also three fourth places.
Coache, who was also the 50 yard butterfly champion last year, finished first again with a time of 27.58. In the 100 yard butterfly, Coache earned second place with a time of 1:00.40. In today race, Coache finished fifth in the 100 yard freestyle (56.60). In addition to individual swimming, she also added two third place finishes in both the 200 yard freestyle relay, and the 400 yard medley relay. Gained also two fourth place finishes in the 200 yard medley relay and the 800 yard freestyle relay.
McRae almost matched her teammate in performances, finishing third in both the 100 yard breaststroke (1:11.74) and the 200 yard breaststroke (2:15.80). In tonight’s event, McRae was able to pull off a fourth place finish in the 200 yard breaststroke, falling one place behind her third place finish on the first day of competition. McRae also joined teammate Coache in the relay events.
Diver Kelly Kidd was able to keep her undefeated season alive in the three meter dive. Kidd who placed third in the one meter on the first day of competition, finished strong tonight with beating her opponents by 24.10 points in her final dive of the night. Kidd’s diving coach Jerry Jennings was awarded the Charles Batterman Women’s Diving Coach of the Year.
