UMass Dartmouth continues winning ways against LEC competition
The UMass Dartmouth Corsairs continued their winning ways by trouncing
Keene State 3-0 and then pulling a stunning upset of top seeded Western
Connecticut.
Traveling to Keene, NH on Saturday, the Corsairs were expecting a tough
match against the conference foe....but Keene State lasted only into the first
game as the Corsairs applied some serious pressure to seal the match in 3 sets.
Next up: WCSU
Winning a match against almost unstoppable Western Connecticut was asking
too much. The WCSU team has only dropped 2 matches in the last 8 seasons and
is considered an LEC dynasty. Well one of the two losses came at the hands of the
up-and-coming Corsairs!
After jumping out to a quick lead the UMD squad handed a bewildered Colonials
a 30-21 loss. Regrouping in game two, WCSU squeaked out a 30-28 win to tie the
match at 1-1. Game three was lopsided as UMD returned every thing hit at them
and grabbed a 30-14 victory. The last set was all UMD again, as they fired on all
cylinders and made almost zero unforced errors. They closed out the set 30-17.
Seniors Meghan Fenton and captain Nikki Verronneau cherished the win, as it was
the first time in their careers that they had defeated WCSU.
On Tuesday, the squad returned to action and defeated Framingham State at home
during senior night. This improved the squad to 14-7 as they prepare for the always
tough BSC Halloween Classic.
The Corsairs are seeded 5th in the LEC playoffs and will be traveling to Eastern
Connecticut for a quarter final match on Wednesday Nov 3rd at 7pm.
