About

Project Global Officer (GO) is an initiative of the Defense Language and National Security Education Office (DLNSEO)  aimed at improving the language skills, regional expertise, and intercultural communication skills of future military officers. Project GO is administered by the Institute of International Education and is targeted at Army, Navy and Air Force ROTC students at American universities.

Project GO Turkish

Project GO Turkish at UF provides scholarships to ROTC students to attend a fully funded 8-week intensive summer Turkish language program. Due to ongoing security concerns in Turkey, the 2017 summer Turkish program will be held at the University of Florida campus from May 8 – July 3. The program will be offered at the beginning and intermediate levels and includes visits to prominent Turkish communities and cultural centers around the state of Florida including Miami and Tampa. Turkish as a Strategic/Cultural Language

Turkey is of particular geopolitical importance as the historical and contemporary bridge between Europe and the Middle East. Turkey has been an active NATO-member since 1952, and was one of the four countries that President Barack Obama singled out as key to peace-building in the region. This relationship is even more critical today with the Syrian civil war raging on Turkey’s southern border and the US Air Force Incirlik Air Base in Adana, Turkey. For example as of March 31, 2015, a new joint US-Turkey military program is under development to train and arm Syrian rebels to fight the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and the security forces of President Bashar al-Assad.

While Turkey is currently an ally of the United States against ISIS, the future of US-Turkey relations remains an unknown in future Middle East conflicts. Our mission is to increase the expertise needed to capitalize on existing understandings for peace, commerce, and cultural exchange, as well as to produce the language skills and area studies knowledge necessary to navigate future ties or tensions between the United States and Turkey.
