It is with great sadness that we convey the news of the sudden and untimely passing of Dr. Stephen R. Boggs on August 13, 2014. A member of our College since 1985, Steve was a thoughtful and caring teacher, a dedicated and compassionate clinician, and a kind and gentle man. Steve’s commitment and energy for student training and for our department will be dearly missed both personally and professionally.

Steve is survived by his mother Dottie Boggs, his cousin Tammy Ward, and his beloved dog Strider. His survivors also include the countless students, colleagues and friends whose lives he touched.

DONATIONS:  Tammy Ward, Steve’s cousin, has asked that in lieu of flowers, people make a donation to Craniofacial Clinic in Steve’s name. As most of you know, Steve worked tirelessly for children with cranio facial anomalies; working with children at the clinic and at the weekend Cranio Camps was one of his great joys and passions.  You can make check donations payable to “UFF” (University of Florida Foundation) & reference “Family Network project F003647″ to support the Cranio Camp. Please send donations to Jeff Jurgens, Department of Clinical & Health Psychology, 1225 Center Dr., Room 3151, PO Box 100165, Gainesville, FL 32610-0165.

CHP hosted a gathering and remembrance for Steve Boggs on Thursday, 21 August at the Thomas Center in Gainesville, FL with approximately 150 guests.  After a dinner buffet, there was a slideshow presentation and several associates and friends gave speeches and told stories to celebrate the life of our dear friend.  Thank you for your attendance and support.

Dr. Boggs first came to the University of Florida in 1985, where he quickly made a strong impression on his colleagues. From 1986, he was a member of our faculty, and achieved tenure in 1993. Over time, he assumed growing leadership roles. From 1999-2009, he served as the Area Head of our Clinical Child and Pediatric Psychology Training Program, and from 2002 until his passing he was Director of the Center for Pediatric Psychology and Family Studies. Since 2010, he was the Director of Clinical Training in our APA-accredited doctoral training program. Prior to arriving at the University of Florida, Steve completed his B.A. in Psychology at West Virginia University (1975), his M.A. in Psychology and Applied Behavior Analysis at University of the Pacific (1977), and then completed his Ph.D. in Child Clinical Psychology at West Virginia University (1986).

As a scientist, Dr. Boggs’ research was funded, since 1987, as Principal Investigator or Co-investigator, by agencies that included the American Cancer Society, the Arthur Vining Davis Foundation, the Children’s Miracle Network, the Florida Disabilities Council, the National Institute of Dental Research, the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, and the National Institute of Mental Health. He was a national leader in the study of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, and published over 60 peer reviewed journal articles and scholarly chapters.

Steve received many professional honors over his academic career, including Phi Beta Kappa, two-time recipient of the Audrey Schumacher Award for Teaching Excellence in Clinical Psychology and, from PCIT International, the National Award for Significant Contributions to Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (the 2009 “Labeled Praise Award”). From 1995-2000, he was a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Pediatric Psychology. Steve was a member of, and held leadership positions, in multiple divisions of the American Psychological Association, including Divisions 12 (Clinical Psychology), 37 (Child, Youth and Family Services), 38 (Health Psychology), 53 (Child and Adolescent Psychology) and 54 (Society of Pediatric Psychology). He was also active in the Association for the Advancement of Behavior Therapy, and the American and Florida Craniofacial Associations. In his role as Director of Clinical Training, he was a member of the Council of University Directors of Clinical Psychology Programs. He was past member of the State of Florida Infant Hearing Impairment Council and the Florida Consortium of Newborn Intervention Programs, and played important service roles in The Florida Conferences on Child Health psychology, the North Florida Hemophilia Association, the Florida Psychological Association, and the Alachua County Schools Health Policy Advisory Board. He also served on many University, College, and Department Committees.

There can be no better testament of Steve’s lasting impact than this listing of the many students he directly touched as a research mentor and committee member. As this list shows, his reach and his work will extend and continue for many years to come.
