A podcast/videocast (sometimes also called a netcast) is a music, talk, or video program that is recorded and then offered for download over the Internet. Many podcasts allow listeners to subscribe via RSS, which allows their computer or portable device to automatically download the program each time a new one becomes available.

It’s also possible to subscribe to Videocasts if you have an account on the site from which they are streamed (e.g.

Application to All Courses

Podcasts and videocasts can be used in a variety of ways to supplement face-to-face, hybrid, or online courses, and are appropriate for any size class. Some possible applications follow:

  • Audio or video lectures can supplement or replace traditional slide presentations or notes.
  • Students could be asked to subscribe via RSS or YouTube so that they will receive new podcasts or videocasts as soon as they become available.
  • Small file size (if using audio) is ideal for students who may be in a remote location that has limited connection speed (e.g. students in other countries, enrolled in a MOOC).
  • Students could be required to subscribe to an existing podcast or videocast as part of their listening/viewing requirements for the course.


Getting Started

  • Record the audio for your podcast with a program such as Audacity.
  • Save the audio file that you have recorded in an MP3 format.
  • Create the RSS podcast feed using an RSS software program or by writing the code in a web authoring program such as Dreamweaver.
  • Put your RSS podcast feed on the Internet.
  • Provide students a link to your podcast.
