ESCC Class of 2013

The ESCC class of 2013 participated in a spring commencement ceremony on May 15, 2013 on the back lawn at ESCC.  The program included a commencement address by Jeff Mitchell, a member of the Virginia State Board of Community Colleges, as well as the presentation of awards and a valedictory address by Courtney Brittingham.  The 2013 class had over 120 students receiving Associate degrees and certificates.

Jeff Mitchell is an attorney in Blacksburg, Virginia, and the former Chair of the Virginia State Board of Community Colleges.  His career combines both private sector experience and the private practice of law.  Prior to founding his own firm, Jeff was a shareholder at LeClairRyan. He is an honors graduate of The University of Richmond School of Law, where he was editor-in-chief of The University of Richmond Law Review.  He is a native of Tazewell, Virginia, and his love of that rural area gives him a deep appreciation and affinity for the Eastern Shore.

The commencement marshal for the 2013 ceremony was Assistant Professor of English Wanda Smith.  Wanda first became associated with Eastern Shore Community College in the 1970s as an adjunct English professor.  She completed a B.A. degree in English from Virginia Wesleyan College, an M.Ed. in Education from Old Dominion University, and postgraduate coursework from Salisbury University.  She has worked full-time since 1986 as an ESCC English professor while also serving on committees and heading projects at the state level. After teaching for forty-one years on the Eastern Shore—the last twenty-six of those at ESCC—she retired in May 2013.
