Applied Physiology and Kinesiology (APK)

The undergraduate Applied Physiology and Kinesiology major at the University of Florida offers specializations in exercise physiology and fitness/wellness. The student will gain an extensive understanding of the anatomical, physiological and psychological consequences to human movement and will explore the relationship between physical activity, health and disease. One semester before graduation, students are placed in a 15-week senior internship where they learn from experienced professionals in the field of applied physiology and kinesiology. Before the student can graduate he/she must pass a comprehensive evaluation completed by their internship supervisor at their designated site.

The objectives of the APK, and the Athletic Training (AT) program, are consistent with the overall mission of the College of Health and Human Performance with respect to offering international and culturally diverse perspectives within courses and the study abroad opportunities offered by these programs.  The APK and AT programs align with, and dovetail the institutional and college missions, and are committed to continuing to promote intellectual inquiry, dialogue, and knowledge production incorporating international and culturally diverse opinions/perspectives. Additionally, the APK and AT programs continue to disseminate the knowledge and research findings within their programs  at local, national, and international levels to promote, and build upon the research reputation of the University of Florida.


APK and AT faculty members and graduate students represent a diverse group of educators that includes different genders, ethnicities, ages, sexual orientations, religious beliefs, socioeconomic status and cultures which extends into course material and creates a strong, well-balanced learning environment for the multicultural and diverse student body at the University of Florida. The diversity held within the APK and AT faculty is consistent with the University of Florida’s mission to recognize that scholarship is driven by a broad spectrum of ideas that arise from diversity within our society and within the global community.

APK Study Abroad-Germany

The APK department has a small exchange program with the University of Darmstadt that has been in place since the early 1990’s. The APK department hosts students every other year and APK students (10) travel to Germany on the opposing years. This program in Germany is with the Institute for Sport Science where APK students are provided with direction in biomechanics, motor control, robotics, and sport psychology. Each APK student that is part of the exchange program is paired up with a German ‘twin’ who they work with as part of a three credit class which culminates in a presentation and a paper. The general purpose of the entire course and exchange is to provide a cultural experience and comparison of perspectives/data from the US and Germany. Students from both programs have the opportunity to tour labs and other universities, as well as, historical sites.  All UF students are eligible for this program but students tend to come from HHP, and specifically from the department of APK.

AT Study Abroad-England

The Athletic Training Program (AT Program) has established the following study abroad course:

Athletic Medicine: Discoveries Influencing Current Clinical Practice

The course includes both lecture material and a 10-12 day learning experience in England.  The field experience in London, England and surrounding areas includes exploration and investigative learning in relevant medical and science museums and university research labs dedicated to the evolution of Sports Medicine.  The course cultivates critical thinking and promotes a better understanding of how doctors and their discoveries impact modern clinical sports medicine.

There are visits to Universities, Museums, Clinical Sports Medicine Venues, etc. allowing the students to interact with faculty, clinicians and researchers in the areas of exercise science, sports medicine, sports therapy, sports nutrition and sports physiotherapy.  Each project and/or abroad interaction centers on connecting the pre-departure topics from a historical perspective to clinical application as used today.  Since Athletic Training as a profession does not exist in the UK we also use the experience as outreach/promotion of our profession abroad.

The mission of the AT Program at the University of Florida is to develop outstanding entry-level professionals who will be contributing members to the profession of athletic training. Through the integration of balanced didactic course work, intensive hands-on laboratory sessions, and excellent clinical experiences students will become proficient in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses for the physically active.

Within the AT Program, concepts of cultural competence and ethnic diversity with regards to patient care/interaction are addressed in the following courses (ATR 4212c, ATR 4213c, ATR 4432 and ATR 4512 at minimum).  Globalization of athletic training is part of the study abroad course – HLP 4933.  This program offers the course biennially summer A term and use the course in part as professional development/promotion, since AT as a profession exists in a limited capacity outside of Canada, Ireland*, Japan, Taiwan and South Korea. [*Ireland is in progress on certification and working on an agreement with the US/Canada for mutual certification rights]

Health Education and Behavior (HEB)

The Department of Health Education and Behavior, with a foundation in the social and biological sciences, offers coursework focused on health information and theory application. Students learn techniques to promote healthy lifestyle choices in individual and group settings, with special attention given to diversity and culturally appropriate health education methodologies.

The mission of the Department of HEB is to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and public understanding of health to promote healthier living. The focus of the Department of HEB is to prepare students to promote healthy lifestyle choices in individual and group settings, and among diverse populations using culturally appropriate health education methodologies. Additionally, the Department seeks to prepare Health Education professionals capable of assessing individual and community health education needs; developing, planning and implementing effective health education programs; evaluating health education program effectiveness; coordinating the provision of health education services; acting as a resource person in health education; and communicating health/health education needs, concerns and resources.

HEB offers a comprehensive curriculum, from Bachelor’s to Doctoral degrees.  These programs address critical emerging issues such as health literacy, health disparities, digital and mobile health applications, and global health.  Students demonstrate core competencies through our highly rated fieldwork opportunities in business, industry, voluntary organizations and government agencies.


Faculty in the Department consists of master instructors, many of whom have been recognized as “Teacher of the Year” at the College and University levels. Faculty members conduct innovative research on public health problems that include substance use and abuse, sexual health, diet and nutrition, controlling chronic diseases, and managing disabilities. Research programs are implemented with diverse populations, locations and settings in Florida, across the US, and increasingly around the world.


Diversity and culture are assimilated into a variety of courses, most notably HSC4624 International Health and HSC4950 Minority Health Issues. Additionally, HSC4624 International Health is part of the requirements for the Health Disparities in Society minor.

Tourism, Recreation and Sport Management (TRSM)

The Recreation, Parks and Tourism program at the University of Florida is comprehensive and prepares students to develop, manage and deliver leisure services to a variety of populations in diverse settings around the world, and to become decision makers in private and public organizations while providing a firm foundation from which students may pursue graduate studies. The objectives of the Sport Management program align directly with the College of Health and Human Performance mission relative to influencing and improving an array of national and international societal problems and challenges.  In support of both the institutional and college missions, the Department of Tourism, Recreation and Sport Management is committed to national and international excellent in the generation, dissemination, and communication of knowledge in tourism, recreation and sport management.


TRSM’s faculty is a diverse group that helps to provide students with a unique cultural perspective in all aspects of their academic programs, including teaching, research and practical learning experiences. Faculty members come from eight different countries including Greece, South Korea, England, Canada, and Russia.


Eric Friedheim Tourism Institute (EFTI)

    • EFTI is engaged in research to solve tourism problems and expand the knowledge base for the industry and the academic world. Through a commitment to research excellence and passion for knowledge, Institute personnel and affiliates lead the nation in transforming intellectual knowledge into useable, sustainable strategies to enhance international, national, state and local tourism organizations, companies, agencies and destinations, as well as tourism-related impacts, including economic, environmental and cultural issues.

University of Windsor MBA Exchange Program

    • The University of Florida Department of Tourism, Recreation and Sport Management has partnered with the University of Windsor Odette School of Business (Windsor, Ontario, Canada) to provide students with the opportunity to engage in studies internationally and earn an MBA in 13 months through an integrated program in which you will learn business and entrepreneurial theory, as well as learn through active involvement with corporate projects and interaction with key business leaders. The Odette MBA will provide students with the tools to better recognize and understand the issues that impact business, as well as enhance their skill set to address those same issues. This opportunity is available to Recreation, Parks and Tourism and Sport Management MS students.

German Sport University-Cologne: Exchange Program

    • The University of Florida Department of Tourism, Recreation and Sport Management has partnered with the German Sport University-Cologne for both undergraduate and graduate students. Graduate students on exchange will take no fewer than 9 and no more than 16 credit hours of coursework per fall/spring academic semester. This opportunity is open to Recreation, Parks and Tourism and Sport Management MS majors.

Jyväskylän Ammattikorkeakoulu (JAMK) University of Applied Sciences, Finland: Exchange Program

    • The University of Florida Department of Tourism, Recreation and Sport Management has partnered with the School of Business and Services Management at JAMK University of Applied Sciences in Finland for an undergraduate student exchange program. Undergraduate students on exchange will take no fewer than 12 and no more than 18 credit hours of course work or its equivalent per fall or spring academic semester or term. This opportunity is open to Sport Management majors.

UF in Russia: Tourism and Hospitality Practicum

    • TRSM and the Russian Studies Program at UF, in collaboration with the State University of Nizhni Novgorod, Russia, offer a five-week Tourism and Hospitality Practicum. The program focuses on tourism and hospitality management and marketing as well as learning Russian language and culture.

Study Abroad

TRSM and EFTI faculty are involved in experiential education notably via the Study Abroad Program. The South Pacific programs are largely conducted in partnership with American Universities International Programs (AUIP) and coordinated with the UF International Center. The programs offer UF students an opportunity to earn academic credits while traveling extensively as a group with UF faculty and local field guides throughout different regions in the world. Below is just a sample of the department’s study abroad opportunities.
