Category: Faculty News, Feature, Recent News

Dr. Joseph Spillane’s recent book, Coxsackie: The Life and Death of Prison Reform (Johns Hopkins, 2014) has been selected to receive the 2014 New York State Archives Annual Award for Excellence in Research Using the Holdings of the State Archives.

The award is presented by the New York State Archives and the Archives Partnership Trust, to “a researcher who has used the records of the State Archives in a creative and insightful way, and has contributed to a greater understanding of a topic and in increased awareness of the research value and availability of archival resources.” The award letter praised Dr. Spillane’s “intensive research project that examines the juvenile corrections system in New York State in the middle decades of the twentieth century” and “commends [his] extensive research using Coxsackie and Great Meadow State Prison inmate case files at the New York State Archives, resulting in the publication of your recent book.”

The History Department hopes that you will join us in congratulating Dr. Spillane on this award!
