Published: January 20th, 2016

Category: Feature, History Department News, Recent News

The Rosewood atrocity took place during the first week of January 1923 in the African American community of Rosewood in Levy County. Gary Moore was the original reporter who unearthed the story of Rosewood in 1982. On February 11, 2016 at 6 p.m. Gary Moore will discuss his new book, Rosewood: The Full Story, at the Matheson History Museum. Admission is free. This program coincides with the Matheson’s upcoming exhibition, Long Road to Freedom: The Florida Black Heritage Trail, which runs from February 9 to March 18.

Moore will discuss his quest to preserve the evidence showing what really happened at Rosewood. Dr. David Colburn, director of the Bob Graham Center, will reveal the findings of the 1993 Rosewood investigation, which he participated in as an official historian. Sherry DuPree, director of the UNESCO-Transatlantic Slave Trade Project and Rosewood Foundation historian, will share the stories of the survivors and their descendants.
