Phi Alpha Theta is a professional honor society whose mission is to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of ideas among historians.  It seeks to bring students, teachers and writers of history together for intellectual and social exchanges, which promote and assist historical research and publication by our members in a variety of ways.  Since its establishment in 1921, Phi Alpha Theta has grown to more than eight hundred thirty-nine chapters in fifty states, more than any other accredited four-year college honor society.

Membership eligibility requirements: Undergraduates must have completed a minimum of 12 credits hours in history courses, with a GPA 3.1 or better for all history classes, and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. Graduate students must have completed a minimum of one third of their residence requirements for the Master’s degree, with a GPA of 3.5 or better for all courses taken for graduate credit, and no grades of ‘fail’ (or equivalent) on graduate record.

The Phi Alpha Theta chapter at UF organizes regular meetings and occasional conferences and produces a journal Alpata which welcomes both undergraduate and graduate student submissions. For more information consult the department’s website: www.history.ufl.edu.
