Welcome to the Linguistics Department

Linguistics at the University of Florida began as an interdisciplinary program in 1969 with five co-operating departments: Anthropology, English, Germanic and Slavic Languages, Romance Languages, and Speech. It became a department in 2010, with the continued co-operation of other departments, particularly Languages, Literatures, & Cultures and Spanish & Portuguese. An important adjunct of the Department from the very beginning was the English Language Institute, providing intensive English language training to international students seeking admission to universities throughout the United States.

UF’s Linguistics Department offers the Ph.D., M.A. (both thesis and non-thesis), B.A., and two undergraduate minors (the Linguistics minor and the TESL minor). A TESL certificate is offered at the undergraduate level, and a SLAT (Second Language Acquisition and Teaching) certificate at the graduate level. We currently have 24 faculty (combining budgeted and affiliated personnel from Languages, Literatures, & Cultures and Spanish & Portuguese), well over 200 undergraduate majors, and approximately 50 graduate students.

Our faculty have expertise in a wide range of linguistic subfields, allowing students to experience the diversity of the field and to focus on what interests them. UF Linguists teach and do research in phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, language documentation, corpus linguistics, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, SLA, language pedagogy, TESL, African linguistics, and historical linguistics, among others.

Please explore these pages to learn more about our faculty, courses, graduate students, activities, and research interests.
