Fields of Study

The Linguistics department at the University of Florida has a long history. It began as an interdisciplinary program in 1969 and became an independent department in 2010. We have 12 full-time faculty and an equal number of affiliated faculty in other departments.

The department encourages students to pursue their own interests and our faculty have expertise in a wide range of linguistic subfields. Currently these include phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, language documentation, corpus linguistics, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, SLA, language pedagogy, and TESL. Students can explore a breadth of topics during their graduate training.

The department has depth of expertise in a handful of specializations and we particularly welcome graduate applications in these areas:

Language Documentation

African Linguistics

Experimental Linguistics (Phonetics, Psycholinguistics, and Neurolinguistics)

Sociolinguistics
