Additional Admission Standards

English Proficiency Requirements

The University of Florida requires proficiency in spoken and written English.

The university accepts the results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). TOEFL is the preferred test for the Department of Tourism, Recreation and Sport Management (TRSM).

Proficiency in the English language is required of applicants and junior-level transfer applicants from countries, including Puerto Rico, where English is not the official language. Applicants must also submit verbal GRE scores of at least 320 (on tests taken before August 1, 2011) or 140 (on tests taken after August 1, 2011).

Required Test Scores

Applicants must submit official results from one of the following organizations with these minimum scores:

TOEFL:
Please note: The TOEFL ITP is not accepted for admission purposes.

Paper-Based: 550
Internet-Based: 80

IELTS: 6

MELAB: 77

The University of Florida school code for submission of GMAT, GRE, TOEFL and TSE scores is 5812.

Exemptions

Documented successful completion of the University of Florida English Language Institute Program serves as a substitute for English Language tests.

International students are exempt from the English proficiency requirement if prior to their anticipated term of enrollment at UF, they were enrolled for one academic year in a degree-seeking program at a recognized/regionally accredited university or college in a country where English is the official language.

International students also are exempt if they are from one of these countries:
Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Botswana, British Virgin Islands, Canada (except Quebec), Cayman Islands, Cyprus, Dominica, Fiji, Gambia, Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Malta, Mauritius, Montserrat, Namibia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Swaziland, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, Uganda, United Kingdom, Virgin Islands, Zimbabwe.

  • International students whose native tongue is English or who have studied at a U.S. college or university for at least one year need not submit TOEFL scores, but must submit satisfactory scores on the GRE or GMAT before their applications for admission will be considered.
  • The UF GRE verbal score minimum is 140 (320 on test prior to 8/01/11) for international applicants who are required to submit their TOEFL scores. This is only the minimum acceptable score and may be insufficient, especially if there are other applicants with higher scores who have applied for the same semester. Even applicants who are exempt from submitting a TOEFL score () must submit a verbal GRE score. If you are a non-U.S. citizen with any questions about whether you are exempt from the TOEFL requirement, please contact an Academic Coordinator.

Additional Application Material for International Students

English Language Requirements for Application Material

Graduate applicants must submit to the UF Office of Admissions and TRSM an official native language copy of each transcript, mark sheet and diploma/degree certificate from each university or college attended, along with certified, literal (exact) English translations for documents not originally issued in English. Transcripts received internationally will undergo a course-by-course evaluation from a NACES-approved evaluator such as WES.

Application Fee

Each application requires a nonrefundable $30 application fee in U.S. currency. Online applicants may use credit cards. If paying by credit card, a $1.75 service fee will automatically be added to the $30 fee — for a total payment of $31.75.

If payment is sent by mail, include a fee cover sheet obtained from an Academic Coordinator. The $30 check must be drawn on a U.S. bank and made payable to the University of Florida. Foreign money orders will not be accepted. If it is difficult to submit the application fee because of currency restrictions in your country, you may ask a friend or relative in the United States to submit the fee on your behalf. Make sure your full name and date of birth are included with the fee payment.

The application will not be processed without the application fee, and no fee waivers or postponements will be granted.

You will submit most of your application material online, but previous colleges and universities and your references may have to submit supplemental material to the following addresses:
