We offer both Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees, specializing in either in Spanish Literature and Culture or Hispanic Linguistics. The links below tell you more about each program. Further below on this page you will find application information.

Please note that we admit graduate students only  for the fall semesters.

The Graduate Program of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies at the University of Florida is comprised by the SPS graduate faculty in addition to some 40 graduate students from the US and around the world (Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Spain, Venezuela, and many more countries). We offer MA and PhD degrees in Spanish Literature/Culture (either Peninsular or Latin American) and Hispanic Linguistics, with the possibility of a secondary specialization in Portuguese.

Our graduate students are usually granted teaching assistantships that carry a stipend ($17,000 per nine months), a tuition waiver, and health insurance benefits. At the time of admission, highly-qualified doctoral candidates can also receive stipend supplements or fellowships involving increased stipends and teaching releases. Additionally, our students benefit from departmental, college and university travel and research grants, plus the possibility of summer teaching appointments. Research resources at UF include the Smathers Libraries (home to one of the largest Latin American collections in the US), the Center for Latin American Studies, and the Center for European Studies.

The Organización de Estudiantes Graduados de Español (OEGE) is an active body in charge of organizing an annual symposium and publishing the online journal Sin Frontera: Revista Académica y Literaria, among other activities. Our graduate students regularly win prestigious teaching awards, present scholarly papers, and publish academic and literary works in the course of their programs.

Our department is housed in Dauer Hall (the former UF Student Union), a neo-gothic building located within the historic campus. Moreover, the city of Gainesville has received numerous accolades in recognition of its quality of life, and it benefits from a low cost of living within a state that does not have income tax. The city and the surrounding community are home to approximately 250,000 people. Situated just over an hour from the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, Gainesville is surrounded by over 40 nature parks, including many spring-fed lakes and rivers. In 2015, Gainesville was named the “Best Midsized College City in America” by WalletHub and ranked no. 7 on Livability.com “Top 10 College Towns.”
