The Vice President for Research has the primary responsibility for the University's funded and unfunded research programs and is expected to provide strong leadership in:

  • Enhancement of the energy and quality of the intellectual life at Clemson University by elevating the environment for funded and unfunded research and for other scholarly and creative activities;
  • Development and completion of an aggressive plan to meet sponsored program goals;
  • Encouragement and support University-wide collaborative programs linking teaching, research and service, as well as new and existing interdisciplinary research centers and institutes;
  • Support of faculty in the identification of sponsors, the development of proposals and the researching of ideas, as well as the protection of faculty and the University in all areas of required compliance;
  • Development of an atmosphere for innovative partnerships on campus with the Vice President for Advancement, as well as with industry in the area of intellectual property transfer;
  • Advocacy with federal, state, congressional and corporate contacts to better understand broad issues and needs relative to research and scholarship programs and economic development;
  • Guidance of the Clemson University Research Foundation through service as the vice-chair of the Foundation's Board of Directors; and
  • Establishment of clear, close and professional working relationships with the Vice President for Public Service and Agriculture and the Directors (SCEAS, SC Agriculture and Forestry Research System, Cooperative Extension and Regulatory Divisions), as well as the Provost and the Dean of the Graduate School.
