The process for Academic Procedures that require external reviews and approvals are described below. The SC Commission on Higher Education and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges have specific requirements related to degree program approval processes. To assist the faculty and administration these webpages are dedicated to each type of major change with specific templates and outlines as required by the SC CHE and SACSCOC.
Minors—go through the normal university curriculum processes and do not require approvals or notifications of the Board, CHE or SACSCOC.
Step 1: The pre-proposal Request of Board consideration is a simple document, and is designed to show that the administration (chair, director, dean) is aware of and supportive of the academic changes proposed. This gets us started and lets us know what to expect for the next Board meeting (February, April, July, October). This document plus the Board Program Planning summary are due six weeks in advance of a board meeting.
Step 2 is the Board of Trustee program planning summary. It’s a three to five page document and all the steps are provided in the template found on the website. The Vice Provost will cover all the steps with you and ensure you meet the deadlines, attend the right meetings, and so forth.
Step 3 is the Board meeting. Once approved by the Board, you proceed through the curriculum committees.
Step 4 is the full program proposal. It’s limited by the SC Commission on Higher Education and the template for completion is found on the website.
o Board of Trustees (Meets: October, January, April, July)
o Preparation of the Full Proposal
o All university curriculum committees are required and please note that PhD programs must be reviewed by an external consultant and a report/letter attached. Also,
o SC CHE—three steps for the full proposal
o SACSCOC: You may not advertise until we have approval from SACSCOC.
Please contact Dr. Debbie Jackson ( firstname.lastname@example.org or 864-656-3194) if you have any questions or if you'd like to request a meeting.
