Sean Luther – “Downtowns are my passion.”

Sean Luther, MRED ’06, is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and earned a Political Science bachelor’s degree from Clemson in 2004 before returning as an inaugural student of the Master in Real Estate Development program.  Mr. Luther currently works for the Green Building Alliance as the Director of the Pittsburgh 2030 District which focuses on reducing energy and water consumption and transportation emissions in existing buildings in downtown Pittsburgh by 2030. This initiative seeks to improve Pittsburgh's economic competitiveness and sustainable standing and includes commitments from over 60 properties and 23 million square feet of space in downtown Pittsburgh, as well as over 20 resource and community partners.

As Director of the Pittsburgh 2030 District, Mr. Luther manages all aspects of the District including convening the District Partners, serving as the primary spokesman, and collaborating with the Green Building Alliance, the District, and Pittsburgh stakeholders, while also focusing his efforts on increasing District participation, progress, and performance. With roots in sustainability, the objectives of Pittsburgh 2030 District also play an important role in maintaining Pittsburgh’s economic competiveness, and Mr. Luther notes that reducing energy and water needs reduces operating costs improving the bottom line allowing real estate to function economically which is critical to Pittsburgh’s.

Prior to returning to Pittsburgh in November of 2012, Mr. Luther spent three years as the President & CEO of Downtown Roanoke, Inc.  While at Downtown Roanoke, Mr. Luther helped the organization refocus its commitment to economic development, particularly focusing on residential development and strengthening the relationships amongst stakeholders in the downtown area, while also developing a strong recruitment strategy for new downtown partners. Mr. Luther also played a significant role in securing the development of an $18 million hotel to be built on top of a parking garage in the heart of downtown Roanoke.  His efforts and accomplishments in Roanoke were rewarded with a Key to the City of Roanoke.  Before to joining Downtown Roanoke, Mr. Luther served as an economic development specialist at the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership.  Now that he is back in Pittsburgh, Mr. Luther will continue to build and strengthen the relationships with property owners, managers, and other organizations in Downtown Pittsburgh which help guide the future success of Pittsburgh 2030 District.  Mr. Luther also holds a certificate in Non-profit Management from the University of Illinois at Chicago and has recently joined the board of the International Downtown Association. Please check out a recent article about the district here.
