Lifeguarding Courses

American Red Cross Lifeguarding course sponsored by the Department of Campus Recreation.

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Lifeguarding Training and First Aid certification as well as CPR/AED certification for the Professional Rescuer, all valid for 2 years. Participants must be at least 15 years of age to participate in the course. Course sessions will include lectures, activities, videos, hands on practice as well as water sessions (to include scenarios and hands on practice), and two final written exams.

Cost

$200 for university affiliates

$225 for others.

Register at the welcome center desk in Fike Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Registration is on a first come, first serve basis. Payment for all certification courses is non-refundable.

Upcoming Courses

April 4, 6, 11, 13, 18, 20 from 4:30-9:00 p.m. The registration deadline is March 30.

May 6 (4:30–9 p.m.), 7 (9 a.m.–6 p.m.), 8 (9 a.m.–6 p.m.). The registration deadline is April 29.

The first half of the class will be located in the Fike Lounge, then class moves to the pool for aquatic skill practice and demonstration.

Course Prerequisites

Participants must be able to pass a prerequisite swimming and skills test on the first class meeting consisting of the following:

  • Continuous 300 (not timed) yard swim, demonstrating proficiency in front crawl (using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing, propellant kick), and breaststroke (using a pull, breathe, kick and glide sequence).
  • 2-minute tread without support and without stopping. Participants can use only their legs.
  • Retrieve a 10 lb. brick from the bottom of the pool (12 feet) and swim 20 yards with the brick, without the use of goggles. This must be done within 1 minute and 40 seconds.

Attendance and Refunds

Course fees are non-refundable if the participant does not attend, does not demonstrate skill competency, or fails the written test.

Refunds will be given to registrants if they are unable to attend and request a refund a full 48 hours in advance. A processing fee may apply. To request a refund at least 48 hours in advance, e-mail: vrober1@clemson.edu  

If a class is cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances participants have the option to be moved to another scheduled course or have a full refund issued.
