The Clemson University Climbing Wall may be used by full time Clemson University students; part-time students who are members of Campus Recreation; faculty and staff who are members of Campus Recreation; community wellness members of Campus Recreation; and the spouses and dependents of the above who have individual memberships or who come under family memberships. The minimum age for use of the Climbing Wall is eight. Use of the Climbing Wall and climbing gear during regular operating hours is free of charge. Food and drinks are not permitted in the climbing area but may be used in a space adjacent to the Climbing Gym. Folding tables can be provided upon request.

Before using the Climbing Wall, all climbers must fulfill the requirements detailed below.

  • Orientation Classes

    Orientation Classes are scheduled during each 2-hour period that the Climbing Wall is open. Orientation classes are required for all new climbers. Climbers who have completed the leisure skills climbing course or who have previous climbing experience may choose to challenge the belay test. Comments and suggestions from users of the Climbing Wall are always welcomed and may be directed to Justin Fletcher at jrfletc@clemson.edu and 864-656-0901.

  • Group Use of the Climbing Wall

    • The Climbing Wall is available for group reservations on days or evenings when the Climbing Wall is not open for general use, Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons according to the availability of staff. The Climbing Wall is not available for reservation during home football game days, holidays and breaks between semesters.
    • A minimum of eight participants is required for a group reservation. The maximum group size is 32.
    • Groups with participants must provide adult supervision in a ratio of 1 adult to 10 participants.
    • Reservations must be submitted at least two weeks in advance. To submit a reservation request, click here.
    • The cost for a student or University-affiliated group is $10 per person. The cost for other groups is $20 per person. This cost includes climbing privileges for a two hour period and use of Campus Recreation's climbing gear. Staff is NOT included in this price. The fee for each staff member present is $15 per hour. One staff member must be present for every 10 climbers in the party.
  • Requirements

    • Patrons must be at least 8 years of age to use the Climbing Wall. 
    • Patrons must complete a Release and Waiver of Liability/Informed Consent and a Climbing Wall Use Agreement before being permitted to use the climbing wall. This form must be signed by a parent for minors (persons under 18 years of age).
    • All climbers must receive instruction in safety rules and basic climbing tips prior to climbing.
    • Climbers must be belayed by a qualified individual (climbing wall staff member or a person at least 15 years of age who has successfully completed belay training and/or a belay qualification test administered by the climbing wall staff). Minors under 15 years of age must be belayed by a qualified individual 18 years of age or older.
