“Looking back on freshman year at Clemson University, I can appreciate my mentor for informing me about upcoming events, her knowledge of campus, and simply being someone I could call on when I needed help. I became a mentor because I enjoyed helping others and wanted to impact the younger generation by telling them to not only succeed in their field of study, but also, to be a role model that others can look up to. CONNECTIONS is a program that helps you to appreciate each other and yourself because you are constantly interacting with others in the program and together we contribute a connection to each others lives. To me, CONNECTIONS has provided me with services and features such as being a protégé or mentor, scholarship information, community service projects, on-campus programming activities, and staff who were more than happy to assist me in any way.”

“Being a protégé in the CONNECTIONS program helped me meet other students in my major that are now vital assets to my academic success. This program has made me feel like I genuinely belong at Clemson. It helped me adjust to college life and get involved in the university, both academically and socially. I now feel at home at Clemson. I decided to be a mentor because I have benefited from my protégé experience and I want to give others the same experience. It is my belief that everyone has something to contribute and I decided that it would be my pleasure to help minorities get acclimated to the culture of Clemson University. This program made the difference between me going to Clemson and being a part of Clemson.”

Marcelo Fernandes

2010 Graduate, Microbiology
Mentor (2008 - 2010)

“I've thoroughly enjoyed being a mentor. The experience has led to great relationships while giving me a chance to make a positive impact on someone else's college experience. The CONNECTIONS program has also made a positive impact on my college experience. It has given me a unique opportunity to learn more about the different cultures and ethnic backgrounds that make this university so unique. Furthermore, the people I've met and memories we have shared will stay with me forever. I decided to be a mentor because I wanted to help other students manage the academic and social pressures that come during the freshman year of college. I know that these pressures often derail students during their first year, and I wanted to keep this from happening to first year students of color.”

“I was a protégé in CONNECTIONS my freshman year at Clemson University. I learned a lot from my mentor about the university and truly appreciated the encouragement and nice words that helped me through the rough times of being a minority at such a prestigious institution. Being grateful for my experience in the program freshman year, I decided to become a mentor my sophomore year and I have been one ever since. I love being able to reciprocate the feeling of security and empowerment given to me by my mentor to my protégés each year.”

Lyndsey Mayweather

Protégé (2006 - 2007) & Mentor (2007 - 2010)

“One of the best aspects of the CONNECTIONS Peer Mentoring Program is being able to witness the growth of individuals, not only the growth of the protégé but also the growth of the mentor. As a protégé in the program my freshman year and now as a mentor I can really say I've grown as a result of the program. The program has provided me with different opportunities to get involved and be a leader.”
