The Fall 2014 Research Workshop will focus on exploring disparities in educational environments. Participants will learn how to use the Crosstab function in SPSS to generate relative risk ratios and odds ratios. Relative risk ratios tell us how many times more likely one group is to experience an outcome than another group. They are powerful, easy to generate, and easy to understand. We will also generate odds ratios which are less intuitive but more often reported in research papers. Lastly, we will discuss the correct way to report both relative risk ratios and odds ratios. Participants will use data from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights and the South Carolina Department of Education to assess disparities in in-school suspension by race.
