About WAC/CAC

The Pearce Center for Professional Communication has played a central role in establishing Clemson’s international reputation for Communication and Writing Across the Curriculum and Writing in the Disciplines. In 2001 TIME Magazine named Clemson “Public College of the Year” and featured Clemson’s commitment to WAC/WID. In the years since, Clemson has consistently been cited by U.S.News & World Report as a top school for Writing in the Disciplines, a list that includes universities such as Brown, Duke and Harvard.

WAC and CAC are defined as is proficiency in writing/communicating through instruction and practice in a variety of courses and fields.

WID introduces students practice with the conventions and formats of a specific discipline.

Writing Fellows

The Calhoun Honors College, the Pearce Center for Professional Communication and the Writing Center partnered to form Clemson Writing Fellows in Clemson’s award-winning Writing Across the Curriculum initiative.  The Clemson Writing Fellows will enroll in a Creative Inquiry course, with Meredith McCarroll, on the theory and practice of peer tutoring while simultaneously working as peer tutors in writing-intensive honors seminars, the Writing Center and in the Honors Center in Holmes Hall. Please email Meredith for more information.

11th International Writing Across the Curriculum Conference

Michael LeMahieu, Ashley Cowden, Phil Randall and Angelina Oberdan will be presenting at the IWAC conference on June 7-9, 2012, in Savannah, GA.

“Client Based Writing: Within, Across, and Beyond the Curriculum”
The panel will examine how, during a time of shrinking budgets and limited funds, client-based writing projects can extend the reach of WAC programs by allowing them to advance university missions not always thought of as conducive to student writing: professional training, economic development, and student engagement.

Funded Projects

To augment its ongoing commitment to improving the communication skills of all Clemson students, the Pearce Center regularly invites requests from faculty in all disciplines for

  • funding for curricular or other initiatives that enhance oral, written, visual, and/or digital communication or that foster writing to learn at Clemson;
  • small grants for communication-based, peer-reviewed research in your discipline;
  • assistance developing a communication component in your grant proposals; and/or
  • space/technology in the Class of 1941 Studio for Student Communication for your project, class, or research team.

Workshops

The Pearce Center offers regularly scheduled workshops on issues regarding written and oral communication to help students at the undergraduate and graduate level prepare for future careers and advanced academic study.

Communication Resources

The WAC Clearinghouse, in partnership with the International Network of Writing Across the Curriculum Programs, publishes journals, books, and other resources for teachers who use writing in their courses.
