Choosing a Major

Choosing a Major

Most students enter Clemson already having selected a specific major.  However, after further exploration and exposure, some students decide their initial choice may not be the best fit.  Clemson has more than 70 undergraduate degree programs.  One is right for you.  It may take some time and effort to discover which one, but advisors can help.  We recommend doing the following:

Choosing a Major Checklist

  1. Visit the Center for Career and Professional Development and take the Discover Test.
  2. Meet with a counselor, in the CCPD, to discuss the DISCOVER Test results and potential majors.
  3. Determine target major.
  4. Check out the change of major requirements for your new choice.  Some majors are restricted based on space or by GPA.  Contact your CES advisor for the name of the person who can discuss your new major.
  5. Schedule a meeting with that person to find out more and to see if you qualify to change.  That individual can also help you decide which courses to take at registration time.
  6. Meet with your official advisor to complete a change of academic program form.  Your new department’s representative must sign the change of major card FIRST.  Your former academic advisor will sign you out.
  7. Take the change of academic program form to Enrolled Student Services in 104 Sikes Hall for processing.
