Nanoparticles Deliver Drugs for a Variety of Diseases
Dr. Naren Vyavahare’s lab develops nanoparticles to target damaged sites related to a variety of diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Marfan syndrome, and elastic fiber-related disorders.
A paper by Dr. Sarah Harcum and her faculty and graduate-student collaborators in Clemson’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering was awarded First Place in the BlueCompetition 2013 for their paper “A Real-time Adaptive Oxygen Transfer Rate Estimator for Metabolism Tracking in Escherichia coli cultures.”
Editor-in-Chief, Challenges in Regenerative Medicine
Dr. Dan Simionescu is Founder and Editor-in-Chief of the journal. The online journal, based in California, will cover all topics related to tissue repair and regeneration. The unique format of the journal encourages open discussions of technical challenges encountered while growing tissues in the lab.

Founding Editor-in-Chief of MDPI journal, Bioengineering
Dr. Anthony Guiseppi-Elie, Professor in the Departments of Chemical Engineering Biomolecular Engineering, Bioengineering, and Electrical and Computer Engineering, will lead the online journal, which is based in Basel, Switzerland.
CI Students Win Social LaunchPad Competition
Students Matthew Kofoed, Danielle Martin, Adam Metzger, and Tyler Youngman won the Spiro Institute’s Social LaunchPad Competition in April, 2013, for their work on woven neck braces that can be produced and used in low-technology areas such as rural Tanzania. Their Creative Inquiry Designing Medical Technology for the Developing World is led by Drs. John DesJardins and Delphine Dean.
Professor Melur (Ram) Ramasubramanian, D.W. Reynolds Distinguished Professor and Department Chair of Mechanical Engineering, who holds a joint appointment in the Department of Bioengineering, was inducted Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering in Washington DC on February 18, 2013. Other AIMBE fellows in the department are Drs. Burg, Giuseppe-Eli, LaBerge, Latour, Vyavahare, and Swaja.
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
Kaitlyn Hackathorn and Sharon Olang, students in Dr. Frank Alexis’s Summer Undergraduate Research Program in Singapore, were awarded the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The scholarship program offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies or credit-bearing, career-oriented internships abroad. Such international exchange is intended to better prepare U.S. students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world. The Gilman Scholarship Program broadens the student population that studies and interns abroad by supporting undergraduates who might not otherwise participate due to financial constraints. The program, designed to support students who have been traditionally underrepresented in education abroad, aims to encourage students to choose nontraditional study and intern destinations, especially those outside of Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand. The program seeks to assist students from a diverse range of public and private institutions from all 50 states, Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico. Congressman Gilman, who retired in 2002 after serving in the House of Representatives for 30 years and chairing the House Foreign Relations Committee, commented, “Study abroad is a special experience for every student who participates. Living and learning in a vastly different environment of another nation not only exposes our students to alternate views, but also adds an enriching social and cultural experience. It also provides our students with the opportunity to return home with a deeper understanding of their place in the world, encouraging them to be a contributor, rather than a spectator, in the international community.” According to Dr. Alexis, “The Gilman International Scholarship Program is a great opportunity for our students to be Clemson citizens in Singapore, where they will engage in research and cultural activities through our mentored research program. There is a strong focus on learning and giving back to the community. The support from the Gilman International Scholarship Program is critical to continue to provide opportunities for our students."
Professor Melur (Ram) Ramasubramanian, D.W. Reynolds Distinguished Professor and Department Chair of Mechanical Engineering and Bioengineering, holds a joint appointment in the Department of Bioengineering. His appointment was finalized in March, 2013.
Clemson names technology development director at CUBEInC
Michael J. Gara is Director of Technology Development for the Clemson University Biomedical Engineering Innovation Campus. His work at Clemson University’s life science incubator involves creation, funding and commercialization of life science companies in Upstate South Carolina.
Honghai Liu, formerly a student in Dr. Bruce Gao’s lab and presently a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Cincinnati, was awarded Editor’s Choice for his paper in the February 1, 2013 edition of Cardiovascular Research, a publication of Oxford University Press.
Dr. Dan Simionescu has been elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. Other fellows in the department are Drs. Burg Giuseppe-Eli, LaBerge, Latour, Vyavahare, and Swaja.
Dr. John DesJardins, his student Riley Csernica, and David Orr, Clemson alumnus and COO of Kiyatek, were awarded an NSF I-CORPS grant to commercialize Ms. Csernica’s design for a functional shoulder brace.

In December, a small group met with Mr. Shealy in McCormick County Court House to present their design prototypes and confer with him on design of devices for the disabled.

NIDCR Awards TMJ Planning Grant
On May 3, 2013, a roundtable meeting on the biology of the temporomandibular joint was sponsored by several institutes of the National Institutes of Health: the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, the National Institute of Arthritis, Musculoskeletal, and Skin Disease, and the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering. The meeting brought together scientists from across the country with expertise in areas related to the structures and tissues of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) to discuss new research approaches to advance understanding of TMJ function.
The goal of the roundtable was to make recommendations for research directions that will provide a national path forward in contemporary, multidisciplinary research on TMJ function in health and disease. Twelve nationally prominent scientists participated in the roundtable discussion, which was attended by NIH institute directors and program staff from the sponsoring institutes and several TMJ-patient advocates. Dr. Hai Yao, Associate Professor of Bioengineering (Clemson) and Craniofacial Biology (MUSC), led the roundtable and provided an overview of current TMJ research.
Dr. Yao’s team has established a nationally recognized TMJ bioengineering research program within the joint Clemson-MUSC Bioengineering Program. The NIDCR recently awarded a planning grant to this team to establish a multi-institutional TMJ research network that may lead to a national center of TMJ research. Clemson recently reported Dr. Yao’s role as PI in collaborative research with investigators at Florida State University; for this TMJ research, the NIH awarded Dr. Yao an RO1 grant.

First Place in National Undergraduate Design Competition
A senior-design team directed by Dr. John DesJardins won the annual National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance BMEStart undergraduate design competition for its project AssureFit, a novel chest-tube anchoring device. Team leader Breanne Przestrzelski and teammates Carlyn Atwood, Lauren Eskew, and Brennen C. Jenkins partnered with Greenville Hospital System pediatric surgeons Drs. John Chandler and Robert Gates to develop the innovative device.

Organized by Dr. Delphine Dean, the symposium included speakers from Engineering World Health, Global Giving, the Gates Foundation, Madaktari Africa, Fluor, and AnMed Health.
National Institutes of Health, American Heart Association: Emily Ongstad, a student of Dr. Martine LaBerge and Dr. Rob Gourdie (of MUSC’s Cardiovascular Developmental Biology Center), has been awarded both an NIH F31 and an American Heart Association fellowship to study cardiovascular disease.

Amanda Farley’s poster was chosen as Best Poster for the Biomaterials division at TMS. Ms. Farley, a student of Drs. Delphine Dean and Molly Kennedy (Department of Materials Science and Engineering), presented on the effect of mineral particles on dental-pulp-cell differentiation.

Dr. Robert Latour was invited to deliver the keynote address for the Symposium on Proteins at Biomaterial Interfaces at the World Biomaterials Congress in Chengdu, China, June 1-5, 2012.

Freshman Creative Inquiry Design for Rehabilitation
Members of two Freshman Design Creative Inquiry Groups worked with client Mr. Arthur Shealy throughout Spring 2013. To improve Mr. Shealy’s limited mobility, the students designed new pieces of exercise equipment to facilitate rehabilitation. In addition to teleconferencing, members of the Freshman Design Creative Inquiry Groups and Dr. John DesJardins met Mr. Shealy at the McCormick County Court House to present him with the products, evaluate them, and share experiences.
Dr. John DesJardins’s work in total joint replacement, orthopaedic biomechanics and biomaterials is featured.

Maglin Halsey and Kaitlyn Harfmann, students in the Technology in Developing Countries Creative Inquiry course taught by Drs. Delphine Dean and John DesJardins, won third place in this year’s Science as Art competition. Their image, taken on a TM 3000 microscope, was also chosen to illustrate the competition’s pamphlets and fliers. The students examined a cross-section of the middle of a porcupine quill. According to Ms. Halsey, “We wanted to examine the structure, and we felt that this image was the most intriguing. We didn't know what to expect, so I would say this was definitely a pleasant surprise.”

CU-MUSC Joint Bioengineering Program graduate students Carmen Gacchina and Erin Pardue were recognized at a recent MUSC Student Awards Banquet for their work on bringing science projects to middle school classrooms.
CU-MUSC Joint Bioengineering Ph.D. Program students Xiaowei Li, of Xuejen Wen and Ning Zhang’s lab, and Erin Pardue, of Scott Argraves’ lab, have been awarded American Heart Association Predoctoral Fellowships to study brain regeneration after stroke and tissue engineering approaches for cardiac applications, respectively.
Dr. Ning Zhang was awarded a DOD Investigator-Initiated Research Award to study spinal cord regeneration.

Karen Burg, Professor and Hunter Endowed Chair of Bioengineering and Interim Vice Provost for Research & Innovation, has been elected Vice President-Elect of the Society For Biomaterials. Her presidency will extend from 2011-2012.
The department seeks a PhD student in polymer chemistry, drug screening, nanomedicine and drug delivery, and imaging agents.
Page Morton Hunter Seminar
Dr. Melinda Harman will present “Post-Marketing Surveillance of Medical Devices: Combining Explant Analysis with Clinical Outcome Registers.” Abstract: The aim of this seminar is to illustrate a post-marketing surveillance model based on the systematic characterization of medical devices. This model has been used successfully to complement traditional in vitro methods for preclinical validation. Dr. Harman will illustrate the combined synergistic use of clinical outcome registers, explant analysis, design review, and biomechanical simulations using specific examples drawn from her research on orthopedic devices. A biomedical engineer who recently completed a two-year international Marie Curie fellowship at the Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute in Bologna, Italy, Dr. Harman has 20 years of experience applying biomedical engineering technology to the human musculoskeletal system. In her area of specialization, the assessment of explanted materials and medical devices, she works closely with leading device manufacturers and surgeons. Dr. Harman has led 12 collaborative research projects on analysis of explanted joint prostheses combined with clinical outcomes and biomechanical simulations. She has published three book chapters and coauthored more than 30 papers in international, peer-reviewed journals. Her educational background includes a BS in physics from Ball State University, an MS in bioengineering from the University of Utah, and a PhD in bioengineering from Clemson University.
MUSC Presidential Scholars
Eleni Katsanevakis, of Dr. Ning Zhang's lab, and Emily Ongstad, of Dr. Anand Ramamurthi's lab, have been selected as 2010-2011 Presidential Scholars at the Medical University of South Carolina.
This summer, ground was broken in Charleston on the MUSC campus for a 100,000 sq ft building that will house researchers within the South Carolina Bioengineering Alliance.
