Clemson Biomaterials Day Symposium

The Clemson Biomaterials Day Symposium, Bionanotechnology: Integrating Nanostructures into Biomaterials, held on September 29, 2012, in Clemson’s Madren Conference Center, was sponsored by the Society For Biomaterials and Clemson’s Department of Bioengineering. Chaired by Dr. Anthony Guiseppi-Elie and organized by Dr. Frank Alexis, the symposium featured undergraduate and graduate research from Clemson and other universities, including Furman University, College of Charleston, and University of South Carolina. The more than 200 participants included industry representatives, parents, faculty members, and students. The meeting’s two keynote speakers were Dr. Joel D. Bumgardner, President, the Society For Biomaterials,  and Dr. Kazuhiko Ishihara, President, the Japanese Society For Biomaterials.  Presentations included entrepreneurship and novel avenues opened by research on nanotechnology in biomaterials. Speakers from academia, industry, technology transfer, investment, research foundations described research avenues opened by the study of nanotechnology.

Clemson University Biomaterials Day Awards given by the Society For Biomaterials went to three undergraduates and three graduate students:

  • Best Undergraduate Research Oral Presentation: Scott Cole
  • Tissue Engineering Special Interest Group Best Undergraduate Research Poster Presentation: Amanda Farley
  • Best Undergraduate Research Poster Presentation: Hannah Aucoin
  • Best Graduate Research Oral Presentation:  Thomas Moore
  • Tissue Engineering Special Interest Group Best Graduate Research Poster Presentation: Srikanth Sivaraman
  • Best Graduate Research Poster Presentation: Nolan Wilson
