Research Interests: Heterogeneous Catalysis and Kinetics

Professor Goodwin's research involves the study of heterogeneous catalysis and particularly the in-situ characterization of surface reaction properties involved in the synthesis of alternative fuels and chemicals from biomass and fossil carbon sources (coal and natural gas).  A major goal of his research is to develop an understanding of the underlying cause(s) of the kinetics of surface-catalyzed reactions. He is internationally known in the field of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis and for the use of isotopic transient kinetic analysis to study surface reaction kinetics.

Current research in his laboratories is focused on the development of heterogeneous (solid) catalysts for biodiesel and Fischer-Tropsch syntheses, on the synthesis of ethanol from coal, and on the impact of impurities in the inlet streams on the performance of the catalyst and ionomer components of PEM fuel cells.  Recent research has also focused on the application of solid acid and base catalysts to the synthesis of biodiesel from vegetable and animal lipids, the development of novel Fe catalysts for the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, the derivation of a comprehensive mechanism for the isomerization of n-butane that reconciled the two proposed mechanisms debated in the literature over the past 10 years, the removal of impurities such as ammonia and tars from biogas-generated syngas, the selective oxidation of CO in hydrogen streams for fuel cells, the use of metal foams as supports for catalysts, metal-support compound formation in supported metal catalysts, and the design of attrition resistant catalysts for slurry bubble column reactors. 

Professor Goodwin is also Editor-in-Chief of the international scientific journal Catalysis Communications, published by Elsevier.
