Harris Graduate Student Awards 2013

CLEMSON - Outstanding graduate students were recognized at this spring's Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Student Achievement Award Ceremony. Graduate students Peng Xu and Kang Shen received Harris Awards, two department-wide awards which have been given each year for the past 29 years in recognition of outstanding accomplishment in the preceding year by a current Clemson graduate student in each of two areas: laboratory teaching and research.

Peng Xu received the Harris Award for the Outstanding Graduate Laboratory Teaching Assistant in 2012 based on evaluations by undergraduates enrolled in ECE laboratory courses and assessment by the faculty supervisors of the laboratories. Peng completed the B.S. degree in automation at the Nanjing University of Science and Technology in 2008 and the M.S. degree in electrical engineering at Clemson in 2011, and he is currently pursuing the Ph.D. degree in EE with an emphasis in intelligent systems under the direction of Dr. Burg. Peng serves as graduate assistant for ECE 496, the capstone senior design course, and his dedication to the assignment is reflected in the comments of the students: “He really understands our project and helped us solve our computer vision problem”, “He was available at almost any hour to help us”, and “Peng can solve any software or hardware problem; if he just gets close to our project it will start working.”

Kang Shen received the Harris Award for the Outstanding Graduate Researcher in 2012 based on the recommendation of a faculty member and evaluation by a committee of ECE faculty. Kang received the B.S degree in electronics and information engineering from the Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 2005 and the M.S. degree in communication and information systems from the Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2008, and he is currently pursuing the Ph.D. degree in computer engineering at Clemson with an emphasis in peer-to-peer networking under the direction of Dr. Shen. Kang’s research on peer-to-peer file sharing and routing in delay-tolerant networks has been presented in several conferences, and his work on social networks as resources in peer-to-peer file sharing will soon appear in the IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing.

Since their inception, the Harris Awards have been accompanied by a monetary stipend, which is provided by the generosity of Harris Corp. The department was fortunate to have Lynn Fagan and Thomas Brown  of Harris Corp. in attendance at this year's awards ceremony to present the recipients with their awards. The Holcombe Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering appreciates the support and encouragement that Harris and its employees provide to our department and our students.
