College of Engineering and Science


The College of Engineering and Science (CoES) is made up of 14 schools and departments, but the unique structure of combining engineering and science programs within one college has led to an uncommon ability to provide a team-based, integrated approach to teaching and research. Scientists and engineers are working together to find more efficient solutions.   • Automotive Engineering
    The Automotive Engineering program focuses on the vehicle from a systems integration perspective. Under the rubric of systems integration, we concentrate our education and research programs on product design and development, manufacturing and electronic systems.

  • Bioengineering
    Bioengineering is the application of engineering principles to the understanding and solution of medical problems. Pacemakers, orthopedic implants, noninvasive diagnostic imaging and human insulin have all been developed through bioengineering.

  • Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering
    Chemical engineering combines chemistry, biology, physics and mathematics, while focusing on the engineering and processing of materials, synthesis and purification. Biomolecular students learn the development of methodologies used to design, fabricate and apply biosensors and bioelectronic devices for the environmental, medical and chemical industries.

  • Chemistry
    Chemistry is vital to modern scientific and technological advances. Nanomaterials, medicine, biotechnology, petroleum, plastics, electronics and pharmacology all depend on the central science of chemistry.

  • Civil Engineering
    Civil engineers plan, design, construct, maintain and operate facilities and systems that control and improve the environment. This includes major projects such as bridges, transportation systems, buildings, ports and water distribution systems.

  • School of Computing
    Students in computer science and computer information systems learn to put technical knowledge to practical use in this rapidly evolving field.

  • Electrical and Computer Engineering
    The work of electrical and computer engineers touches most areas of modern life, from cell phones to personal computers. Students learn how to design systems controlled by embedded microprocessors and to generate reliable power systems.

  • Engineering and Science Education
    Engineering and science education is built on a resolve to deliver effective teaching, foster student learning and connect research with education. This program benefits both undergraduate and graduate students interested in careers in academia.

  • Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences
    Students learn to solve problems associated with pollution, waste management, urbanization and natural hazards such as flooding and erosion. Engineering geologists study the properties of rocks and surficial materials and investigate geologic factors that affect structures such as bridges, buildings and dams.

  • Industrial Engineering
    As other engineers foster advances through innovative new technologies, industrial engineers deal with the technologies involved with their implementation and use. As technological advances are continually made, industrial engineering is evolving to keep pace with their use.

  • Materials Science and Engineering
    Clemson’s materials science and engineering program is designed for students with an avid interest in how and why materials behave the way they do and a desire to be at the forefront of this interdisciplinary 21st century renaissance field.

  • Mathematical Sciences
    Mathematical sciences students study pattern, form and structure in addition to learning how to develop algorithms, models and experiments.

  • Mechanical Engineering
    Mechanical engineers develop the products and systems that benefit mankind by making existing products and processes better while improving the comfort, convenience and quality of life. This work advances everything from medical technology to automotive systems.

  • Physics and Astronomy
    Physics has a wide range of study, including electricity, magnetism, atomic nuclei and the study of atoms and molecules. This department includes astronomy, which incorporates the study of planets, stars and galaxies.
